A4000 Help

My trusty A4000 finally packed it in over the weekend. The power supply gave out. Sifting through my Amiga graveyard, I actually managed to find a replacement power supply and hooked it up to my A4000. The system boots up normally and all seemed well, except for one small problem. I am unable to double click on any icons. The mouse pointer moves around fine, but remains in loading mode (a clock icon) and doesn't become the usual red arrow icon??? Please excuse my lack of technical jargon.

When I boot the system with no startup sequence, I can access all my files and most of the programs work fine. There are a few (like SCALA) that bring up the requestor for me to insert volume ENV.

The only thing that is different with the new set-up is that my CD drive and disk drive are no longer plugged in. Neither of them function anymore, so I wasn't concerned about them having no power.

Any suggestions on how to move forward would be much appreciated.

Try hooking up the CD  and drive--floppy?--again. You have a driver that can't locate it's hardware. Even if it isn't working properly, it is still recognized by the system and the driver is loaded at startup. You can also boot without a startup sequence and do a loadwb command. You should be able to remove the CD0 file from the Devs/DOS Drivers drawer which is probably the file that is hanging up the system. I would try hooking it up just like it was before first.

Hold down both mouse buttons on a reboot and enter early startup and see if you can boot to the CLI. No startup sequence.

Hi everyone. I've been able to run wb with no startup sequence. Most of my software works fine, but programs like SCALA and ImageFX ask for me to insert volume ENV.

I tried removing emptying the wb startup folder, but that had no effect. I was still unable to double-click on any icons in wb, although I could still move the mouse around.

I then looked at hooking-up the floppy drive and CD drive. Unfortunately the replacement power supply doesn't have the right connectors for me to do that.

At least I can now get in and access my files. A step in the right direction. I assume something is off in the startup sequence or user startup??? Is it likely my A4000 is freaking because it is looking for DF0 and CD0?

Yes, I think it's the CD drive. Move CD0 from SYS:Devs/DOSDrivers to SYS:Storage/DOSDrivers to disable mounting the CD drive.

The lack of floppy drive will cause a delay before the system starts booting, but once Workbench is loaded not having a floppy drive shouldn't have an effect.

I'm a bit confused how your replacement PSU doesn't have a power connector to fit the CD drive, though. I don't think I've ever seen an internal power supply that *didn't* have such a connector.
