How to view amiga.org correctly in Aweb, sort of.

Try this link in aweb, it does indeed display it correctly with css, but its not interactive at all.

There might be some workaround, but I don't have the time to investigate in to it.

Why not just use:

You can see how it looks on a video I made for my blog some days ago:

Thumbalizr takes screenshots. Quite how such a service could be suggested as a way to browse amiga.org on an old browser is beyond my reckoning.

If there was a service that did that but also turned it into an image map so that the links would be clickable - it might be usable.

I've no idea if aweb supports image maps though.

On a side note - im sure i heard somewhere the the Amazon Kindle Fire's web browser does some pretty funky stuff to speed up rendering.

Amazon Silk

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Silk

For each webpage, Silk decides which browser subsystems (e.g. networking, HTML, page rendering) to run locally on the tablet and which to run remotely on the Amazon EC2 servers.

perhaps something like this could be achieved?

N...

For some websites you can use Google Mobilizer
http://www.google.com/gwt/n

Doesn't work nicely for many websites though.

I had this same thought a few weeks ago when I heard how Opera Mini works.

It uses the Opera servers to filter out all the advanced features and replace them with prerendered images but the site functionality is left as complete as possible.

If there was a web service or even a proxy server you could run on a local computer, that would be a pretty cool way to handle web browsing.

Well afaik aweb does support image maps, so "all" you really need to do is put a html layer ontop of the image, which can be done with php.

It would sure make older systems and browsers run better.

Especially if you had the proxy server reduce the colors and resolution so that the browser didn't have to do it on the slower cpu.

Maybe have something in the user agent string to tell it how much to reduce the page.

In a way, you can still browse the web from an Amiga if you have a local PC as the proxy, using VNC!

If only I had a Pi to act as the PC/VNC server and use a lot less power than a towered PC...
