hi, thanks for all the posts, all i realy want to do at the moment is have a bit of a nostalga trip an play a few old games, i've already got f19 stealth figher of ebay so i can pretend i'm 14 again :)

so i see that upgrading the a500 is really a no no

i have a couple of mice, an external floppy drive, and a gvp impact series 2 a500-hd8+ and am looking for a joystick

the thing is with the gvp, i think the amigas have warped a bit with age, i'm afraid to force it into the slots its very tight, and on the one amiga that it did seem to fir eventually, when i powered everything up, lights came on but got nothing on the screen? any ideas

where do i post asking the kind folks in amiga land for workbench disks i can buy/borrow/copy?

I think you wan'na get that GVP up and running on the best A500.  Probably the V2.0 one.  If you're a little bit ofay with electronics and opening stuff you can open them up and check the state of the MBs.  You mentioned warping and if the units were stacked in a pile with weight on top for years they could be warped an this could be a problem with plugging in the GVP. Best thing to do is open them up and check their state, or if you're not confident get a friend who has PC building experience.

Once you get the GVP unit up and running it will give you the platform to extract ADFs to disks. (A bit of work to set up your rig to do this but if you're lucky the GVP will boot on the v2.0 A500.)
The problem with standalone A500s is there is no way to get them to do anything unless you have a way of creating floppy disks from ADFs.  You are reliant on buying disks off ebay/amibay or on someone's good nature to supply freshly cut ADFs too you.
Using something like WHDload isn't an option on a vanilla a500.

I'm happy to send you WB disks, but I'm in OZ and you're in the UK.  Other option is to relocate to OZ ;) Seems to be a popular thing these days.

'Cummon UK Amigans.  Let's give noely02 a hand..

If ur in the UK then one ez way to get Amiga floppy disks is to walk around all day wearing a shirt or jacket with a large Amiga logo on it.

UK has more Amiga floppies per capita than any other country except for maybe Sweden, Norway and Germany.

Remember, when Mehdi Ali of the infamous Islamic Crime Syndicate, assassinated Commodore Business Machines; Commodore UK Ltd. was a completely separate company and was still completely profitable and selling a healthy number of Amigas each week and gazillions of Brits had one or three Amigas.

If you go to the local malls, pubs etc. with a big Amiga shirt on (perhaps with the text "I need ur floppies" underneath) then I am certain u will have 5 new friends within 2 weeks and you'll have thousands of old floppy disks.

A500 was the ULTIMATE computer and video game system of the 1980s and an extremely good one of the 1990s.  Anyone that was kewl had 1 or 2 of them with thousands of floppies.  Most of these floppies are just sitting in boxes rotting away now.   You can get thousands for free if you just meet the right guys.

If ppl hafta mail u floppies then don't expect more than a few to get u started.

I really sincerely hope u enjoy being 14 again.  It sounds like an unbelievably fun plan. :knuddel:
Wanna try a wonderfull strategy game with lots of handdrawn anims,
Magic Spells and Monsters, Incredible playability and lastability,
English speech, etc. Total Chaos AGA

also i opend the trapdoors for a nose and found 1 has a spirit technologies pf-b94v-0, read elswhere this is 512K ram expansion

How is this done?  This is intriguing.

Use Amiga Explorer from Cloanto.

That's Relokick.
Basically, if you have kickstart higher than 1.3 (2.x, 3.x) and you need a 1.3 kickstart to play a particular game, relokick will restart your machine with the 1.3 kickstart.

It's nice (was great back in the day), but it's not Workbench.

For what?  Does it come with a parnet cable and the software to make it run?
I run linux anyways.

Yes, it's slow serial, but ADF Sender Tool (Windows app) runs fine under WINE.  :-)

I'd be surprised if the low level parallel port apps work under WINE.

Amiga Explorer is the software (http://www.amigaforever.com/ae/)

Besides that you just need a null-modem cable.

I should be more specific.  I have no need at the moment for transfer to or from my miggies with either method.  If I need some things on there, I tend to burn a DVD-RW or use crossdos to move floppies around (depending on the size of stuff).  I asked about the parallel link more out of interest than necessity.  The fun for me lies more in the hand building of a parallel to parallel cable and either adapting or writing software to do what I would want it to do.  I had never heard of the parallel method and was therefore interested.
