Amiga 500 plus with 68020?
« on: December 09, 2012, 09:43:38 PM »
Me again.

I've been reading a great thread where someone done great work on bringing an old 500 plus to life and a 68010 was used.

It got me thinking - Can a 500 plus have a 68020 fitted directly into it?

Hi.  No, not directly as they are not pin compatible.  Someone could make an adapter I think, but the closest there is would be the CSA MegaMidget Racer.  Basically a 68020 running at 7.16MHz with no RAM.

Not directly but there are various 020/030 boards that plug into the 68000 socket on the A500/+.

The minimum spec mega midget racer is an 030 running at 16Mhz?

Hopefully the link works.  Tiny board!

Running it at 7mhz is a waste, as long as you synchronise bus access with the 7mhz clock then you can run faster. Without ram it is limited, but cache and multi cycle instructions that don't access memory will mean it would run faster.

Whenever I think of this type of thing my mind moves to fpga's. But then I'd want it connected to the agnus and denise sockets too. Then you could have 8mb of 32 bit chip ram, with better than AGA features. All you'd have left then would be paula and the cia's. But of course then you would want to improve paula too.

I agree.  I had one of those Mega Midget Racer boards and barely noticed any speed increase.  I think it was measurable with a benchmark program, but the machine didn't feel faster at all.  Without any 32bit ram, most accelerators are a waste hanging off the CPU socket.

The other CSA products were good though.  I always wanted to score one of their external Turbo Amiga boxes for my A1000 - I was amazed when that was first announced.
