Connecting Jaz 2GB drive to Amiga 500+ HD
« on: January 24, 2004, 09:39:23 PM »
Hello again!

I recently got myself an Iomega 2GB Jaz drive (scsi). I noticed that the external scsi connector on my Amiga 500+ RocHard HardDiskDrive is a good physical match, in other words 'fits' that of the jaz drive.

My A500+ is bog-standard with WB2.1. Now here are my questions - any help appreciated:

1) Would the drive work on this setup (no compatibility issues/anyone with experience)?
2) What kind of drivers/software would I need and where is the best place to start looking (my guess is aminet, right?)?
3)  Is booting off a jaz drive possible (under wb2.1)?
4) If a different filesystem is necessary - is it compatible with my miggy's rom/wb combination?
5) Would the amiga simply see it as a harddrive?

I didn't try turning them on and testing as I am afraid of damaging my precioussss A500+.
I just think that it would be great for installing WHload and games to play with, as the miggy's existing HDD is microscopic (50mb I think).....I cant wait to get it working :))))))
pheww that's it....for now :-)

thanks to everyone beforehand.

If your RocHard has SCSI, then you're set. Many RocHards are IDE only, so check that before doing anything else.

1) no reason why not, unless the RocHard's SCSI implementation is hideously broken (not the case as far as I know)
2) no drivers, you can use a mountlist/dosdriver or just prep the Jaz disks with hdtoolbox
3) possible ever since ks 1.3
4) you can use what ever FS you want
5) yes

You can't really damage the machine by connecting a SCSI device to the HD controller, but of course if you don't know enough it's always good to be cautious.

I think Rochard should have enhanced chips to handle SCSI; they had white stickers on.
