Lefty Hack?
« on: September 02, 2012, 04:10:03 PM »
Is there a hack (hardware or soft) for swapping the Amiga mouse's buttons for a lefty?

I'm perfectly comfortable using a regular mouse (for the right hand) and have done so for years.

However it occurred to me that I might like to be able to use two Amigas simultaneously and I'll need to be able to use the one on the left with my left hand, while my right is busy with the other one.

Have a look at the links on the aminet page here...

http://aminet.net/search?query=left+mouse

BTW, I've done the same with my pc set up for years. Fun being ambidextrous, and it can really mess with co-workers who try to use your desktop. :)

Thanks! Glad its a software hack. Hardware mods make me nervous. Original Amiga mouse replacements can be hard to find and expensive! I wouldn't want to take the chance of screwing mine up trying to modify it!

Same, here.  I had an old boss who used to get pissed because he'd want to use my computer and the mouse was on the "wrong side."

On my desk at home I have my Windows mouse on the left with buttons reverse and my Amiga mouse on the right.  I switch my monitor to whichever machine I want to use and grab the appropriate mouse.  Now if I just had a USB KVM switch (or just KM switch, or maybe just USB) I could use the same keyboard and mouse on both machines.  But I have priorities higher than that, and I rather like my 4000 keyboard.

I have a blind employee at work, who doesn't use the mouse at all. So when I need to help her with something that the text to speech software can't recognize, I usually need to retrieve the mouse from somewhere behind the monitor :)

So, you're comparing left-handedness to a handicap like blindness?  Ok, fair enough :hat:

In OS3.5 and 3.9, you can adjust the handedness of the mouse directly from Input prefs. No additional patches/hacks needed.

A simple male-female adapter that swaps the mouse button lines would be very simple to make and there's really nothing that could go wrong with it.

I've actually never had a problem using the default button assignments with either hand.
I guess I just don't associate left click behaviour with my index finger when using my left hand.
While I'm not ambidextrous, I do use my hands interchangeably for a lot of things that most people only do with their dominant hand.  My left-handed writing looks pretty childish, though.
