Greetings Amigans!
« on: August 19, 2012, 09:50:55 PM »
Hi all!

My first machine was actually the VCS but my first proper computer was the legendary C64 breadbox edition. I feel sorry for kids today never having had to endure loading stuff off audio cassettes - why it made me what I am today! I didn't get where I am today by loading stuff instantly off SSD- tell you that fer nowt squire! ;)

My first Amiga was the equally legendary A500 but I also went through a A600 and a A1200 before defecting to Linux land after a brief detour into the land of BSODs. I've mainly been a Linux user since '96 but this year I returned to my roots by getting a A600 to keep my Pandaboard and Xperia Play company. I'm a big fan of Debian but I'm also keeping close tabs on Haiku as it feels more like the Amiga than any other modern-ish OS (apart from AOS and MOS of course).

One of my biggest material regrets is having sold my C64 and my original Amigas but I do still have my VCS and I'm also the proud owner of a Zaurus SL-C3000 signed by RMS no less!

The main reason I've registered on these forums today is I'm hoping someone on here will be able to sell me an Amiga Keyrah Amiga USB keyboard adapter because Vesalia are all out and seem unsure when (if?) they may be getting any more and as far as I know they are the only place that sells them right?

Lovely to meet your textual selves!

Dan
Please PM me if you have an Amiga Keyrah adapter for sale!

runequester:

Hi! Thanks for the welcome! I like listening to bizarre radio talk shows like C2C and Red Ice etc and it seems a notably disproportionate amount of these researchers and writers on very unusual topics have come from your neck of the woods. Portland is not quite Sedona or Colorado but its not far off either it seems! :)

JimS:

Binary toggles! Damnit thats every bit as hardcore old skool as punch cards or wooden beads hence I obligingly bow down and pay due respect to your more thorough geek upbringing. You're the kind of (Grand)dad I would've wanted, binary toggles n'all! :D

Seriously though, everyone who went through the 8-bit computer era (and what came before) appreciates todays gadgets infinitely more than the tech whippersnappers ever could and I've long appreciated and known this to be true.

I cannot and should not speak for most amigans, but the amiga -> linux progression seems to be quite natural ... welcome!

Hi A-P-W!

UNIX predates AmigaOS by about 15 years, Commodore released a UNIX variant for the Amiga, Linux has long had an m68k port, around 2000 whoever owned Amiga then was talking about taking it over to Linux and I think you're damn right in saying that a fat chunk of ex (and/or remaining) Amigans use Linux and have done so for many years.

Our Commodore Cult is seemingly separate from yet highly intertwined with the GNU/Linux community ain't it?

EDIT

I should've also mentioned UAE which brought our ECS/OCS Amigas onto Linux, the AmigaOS/Linux hybrid OSs (AROS etc) and AmigaOS did become a portable layer on top of Linux at one point didn't it? There is no division between the Commodore and Linux communities after all! :D
