Are 3.x Kicstart Roms the same for A1200 and A4000?
« on: August 15, 2012, 01:14:11 PM »
Hi All,

Are the Kictstart ROM chips from an AGA amiga interchangable? For example could I use the 2 kickstart 3.1 rom chips from my A1200 in an A4000? I'm pretty certain that the chips would fit but are there any differences in the kicstart software itself to handle slight differences in the hardware?

Cheers

Ben

A1200 rom includes specific drivers for pcmcia and ide and A4000 rom includes drivers for a4000 ide. These are not interchangable. Use Blizzkick or buy new roms :-)

Thats the A4000T kickstart 3.1, not the A4000. As well as the ID, you can tell by the NCR scsi and wbfind instead of wb.

It's possible that an a1200 kickstart would work in an a4000.

Amigakit only has 4000T roms that's why I linked Vesalia, since the 4000T roms are missing  workbench.library it's worth the extra shipping to get 4000D roms. But that's just my opinion and up the the buyer to decide.

You would lose IDE support. A1200 roms may try to initialize ide at wrong address & pcmcia so perhaps it's not a good idea. A4000 in A4000T on the other hand would probably work but you would lose motherboard scsi support.

Possible? I don't think so, but not recommended.

For starters, the A4000 kickstart has routines in the boot code to set the state of the MAPROM function on the A3640 card, which the 1200 kickstart doesn't.

A1200 roms can be used to locate errors on the a4000-hardware.
Broken Buster or other Zorro-problems.

ide is different, a4000/a3000.bonus is missing (onboard mem)
zorro is missing
