Trying to resurrect A500 and Trumpcard 500 AT
« on: July 30, 2012, 03:11:14 AM »
Hi gang,

I got hold of my original A500 and Trumpcard 500 AT HD controller again and I'm trying to get them going with the hopes of pulling some data off of my old floppies.  The A500 works fine, but there seems to be some problem with the Trumpcard.

Both HDToolbox and the IVS utility report the wrong sizes for drives (100 or 250 MB it seems).  I can format the drive, and copy Workbench to it, but when I try to boot from it, it hangs with the HD light on solid for 10-20 seconds, then I get "Setpatch; program failed".

Originally I was trying with the last drive I used with this controller, an old Seagate 250MB drive, which still spins up, but I seem to get even less results with it connected.  The next smallest drive i have is a 40GB Maxtor, which exhibits the above problems.

My question is, is anyone out there using one of these Trumpcards with a larger drive?  Is this the cause of my problems, or is there a hardware problem?

When I set the 40GB drive up with HDtoolbox it detected it as a few hundred megs, I'm not sure if that will just work and ignore the remaining capacity of the drive, or maybe this is causing problems?

I am powering the Trumpcard externally via a ATX power supply, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The A500 has an Mtec '020 card installed, but it and the Trumpcard got along quite well originally, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I wanted to try another IDE cable and didn't think I had one, but realized my PC still has one for the CD ROM.  I swapped that in and all seems to be working fine now!
