I'm getting random #8000000? errors. A1200
« on: July 15, 2012, 07:21:57 PM »
Hi there,

I've started getting random "Program Failed" #8000000? errors.

I have an Apollo 68030 MKIII accelerator card with 16MB installed.

I have a modded 300W atx PSU so I doubt it's a power consumption issue!

I boot into Workbench from a 4GB CF card with 3 partitions 2 of which are full of WHDload games, it's been fine until today.

It happens after it's been on a while, which suggests an overheating issue.

I recently upgraded the card from 8MB to 16MB, but I've since removed the "new" simm and it's still happening.

I've removed the accelerator and it seems to be booting ok, but it's obviously extremely slow and it seems most of the WHDload games won't run due to lack of RAM.

It seems like the accelerator might be dying. I've put it back in and the 1200 won't boot at all, just sits on a blank screen with the power light on.

Other than cleaning the contacts is there anything else I can try?

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but the mobo revision is 1D.1 from 1992.

Update: I've put the card back in and all is well, definitely seems heat related.

usually 030 cards aren't so bad with heat. Try running it with the trapdoor removed, raise her off the desk a little, and maybe a fan pointed under the machine.

There has been:

80000003, 80000005 that I recall.

Something like this is what comes up:

Ramlib
Program failed (error #80000003)
Wait for disk activity to finish
Suspend         Reboot

However it's not always #80000003, it's been a fair few others! One might say "Installer" another "Workbench".

I'll try with the trapdoor off and raising it up a bit.

Since the CPU faces up on your card, heat is less likely an issue but you can easily test by setting a small deskfan (or similar) blowing through the vents. Make sure the A1200 contacts are _really_ clean with an eraser and IPA. Another idea is to fully insert the accelerator, then back it off the edge connector just a smidge.

Increase your Stack...  look in the s/startup-sequence and double the figure that is shown, if none shown then add Stack = 30000 or something

Then see if the machine gives Guru after a long run time :)

Completely useless? I can always be used as a bad example

I've given the contacts a clean with an eraser, but it hasn't made a difference.

I'll have to liberate some alcohol and a fan from work to try those!!

Erm...I have no idea how to do this!! I've been out of the Amiga scene for a very long time, and when I was in it I only used it for games!!

Ok a quick update.

I found a couple of 32MB simms at work (I won't go into what they are from, but I can probably get shed loads of em), installed them and so far all seems well.

I gave to contacts a wipe with some alcohol wipes, this took off a fair bit of crud.

I've currently got the 1200 raised from the desk by a couple of inches to to help with heat dissipation whilst it's running a demo of Tornado AGA which I'm going to leave running for a while.

I've changed too many things to properly fault find, but it seems all good so far, fingers crossed! A free 64MB can't be bad either!!
