How to run PAL games and demos in colour?
« on: July 10, 2012, 04:32:00 AM »
I am on my NTSC Amiga, being used to my PAL Amiga, I'm not accustomed to seeing my demos and games in black and white with the screen too low.

I remember having to hold down both mouse buttons in order to boot into PAL which centers the screen correctly, but how do i get games and demos to display in color?

I have one of Amiga maniac's RGB adapters btw.

Is there a jumper you can throw? PAL signals on an NTSC modulator (such as the one built into 600s, 1200s, CD32s) or vice versa normally results in a black and white picture. I thought amigamaniac's design got around those issues... perhaps not?

Normally the RGB port should throw out color, regardless of PAL/NTSC.

You can't.  Your screen can't handle PAL.  If you get an Amiga monitor it will work fine and display PAL in color.  You can try to get a scan doubler and see if that works on your TV... But those typically cost over $100.

Only B+W you must be using composite  output.. RGB should show color in PAL and NTSC. To get the early boot menu pal/ntsc selection you need 3.x roms.

yeah, RGB is the best solution, if you can find TV with SCART over there. BTW, there is a thread about converting RGB to YPbPr at EAB forum.

Amiga Maniac's adapter does not seem to be able to resolve this. :(

I really wish I would not have thrown that hard drive through the screen of my nice multi-sync DELL Monitor. Of course I was not aiming at the monitor, but that's where it ended up. Sighh....

I'm not sure about the Amiga Manic's unit, but it must outputing composite video. The best way is straight RGB to a 1084 or through a Commodore adapter (RGB to VGA) to a suitable monitor like a Dell ST2023L or a few others (there's a thread on here somewhere). That wasn't the model of your multi-sync was it ;-( ?

I got a 1084S, but am trying to find a solution so I don't have to depend upon it should it some day die. Besides it is kinda huge and is just awkward to have sitting out amongst my other gear.

As for the Dell, I am not home right now so I forget the model number, but I do remember it was not cheap and it was not easy to find. I only had it for about 2 months. :/

What had happened is I came home from my parent's. I had dumped a few Gigs of data from their hard drive onto my external, needless to say my external randomly puked on my when I got home (I had received this one from the factory after the 1st one went bad).

Needless to say this angered me much and during my temper tantrum I threw the drive at the wall intending to break it into pieces and mail it back to it's maker, but as fate would have it, it veered left and smacked straight into my new Dell Monitor.

Again, sighhhh....

That's precisely why I got a GBS-8200 and made a cable.
Have my A1200 on that now.
Although my A500 and A1000 have their 1084s monitors...

How did you modify your GBS-8200 to work with the Amiga's 23 pin port?

Also do the pixels flicker in Laced screen modes, do you experience color loss, etc. etc.?

IIRC, A500, A500+,A2000 had only black and white composite video output. Colours available via RGB connector.
A600 and A1200 have colour output also on the composite video.

Hmmm... I do not seem to remember if A3000 and A4000 had composite output at all....

For the note, I am running my video out through the 23 Pin port into Amiga Maniac's adapter.

I desoldered the DB23 from an A520 I had and soldered the wires to it.
It's only 5 wires, so even I could do it.  ;-)
I have ordered a "real" DB23 to make it a better / cleaner connection.

I've only just hooked it up, so it's hard to tell..
I have noticed some flickering of pixels, but it's not always there...
That's one of the reasons I ordered a DB23, as my current solder job is really bad.
I'll let you know after I fix that up...

I haven't noticed any color loss, but I'd probably have to try swapping cables to one of my 1084s monitors to really test it..

For $30 or so tho, I'm not complaining! :-)  I'm not expecting an Indivision at that price. ;-)

Also, you flipped the NTSC/PAL switch (or jumper depending on the version) of Amigamaniacs adapter?
Did you adjust the variable resistor?  (If your model has one)

I know I got PAL games to run in color from my NTSC Amiga using Amigamaniac's adapter, but I'm not sure I was ever toggling the Amiga to PAL mode..

Ya, I'd def be interested in hearing back from you on this. Especially to know if you are still experiencing any pixel flicker after you adjust the cable.

With Amiga Maniac's Adapter I am stuck in non-laced modes because my S-Video to VGA adapter does not play well with laced modes in the least bit.

Also I have flipped the switches on Amiga Maniac's board, but I just end up going from black and white to rolling screen with lots of reds. :/

I could have swore it used to display PAL fine with my other PAL Amigas. I may have to hook one up and run some tests.
