If you know how to turn it off using OS X, you should be able to boot from the Leopard CD and go from there without installing Mac OS.

Besides, why do you dislike the sound? You are using a Mac so you shouldn`t be ashamed if it sounds like one.

Try this?  Source and applicable quote follows:

I know this thread has pretty much died out, but I found an answer on the ArchLinux Wiki at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBook --

1. Reboot with an OSX installation disc
2. Start the Terminal
3. Issue the command "# /usr/sbin/nvram SystemAudioVolume=%01"

I can confirm that this works on a late-2010 Macbook Air and Snow Leopard.

And from here:

I use the command nvsetvol from the package powerpc-utils on my ibook.
"nvsetvol 0" will turn it off, but I like "nvsetvol 1".

Buddy of mine opened his with a few .45 shots.  Worked magically.  (Not PPC, or I would've gone mad... he gave me his PPC unit a while back.)

I actually like the sound, myself, but it is wayy too loud on my PowerMac G4 on startup. I'll dl the little tool. And I have a question; Why do people hate OS X? Its well updated (about every two years) it has amazing software support when compared to other UNIX/Linux derivatives, and its Aqua/Quartz is vastly better than window's current set up. I can't say its the best interface out there, but it is pretty nice.
My machines:
PowerMac G4 MDD 1.5ghz 1.25GB 10.5.8 & MOS 2.7
Mac Mini C2D 10.6.8 2GHz 3GB 250GB HDD
MacBook Retina 16GB 256GB SSD 10.8
iPad 2
Underground Gamer invites (a classic game site) PM

Need a part for a PC or Mac? PM me, I\'ll let you know if I come across it.

OS X trumps Windows on every level.

MorphOS, OS4 and Classic Amiga systems are the only ones who are real \'Amigas\', not that joke AROS or Amiga Forever.

Just wondering if there was a way to turn off that dreadful Apple startup sound when i boot my Morphos Macmini. I read somewhere that you were supposed to turn it off on OSX before you install MOS? Is there a way i can turn it off from inside Morphos without having to reinstall Leopard? I'm not running a dual boot. Morphos only.

Cheers!

@Kesa

On powerup, take 25 pound sludge hammer and strike Macmini as hard as you can where you think it will turn off speaker.

WORKS FOR ME!!
