ShapeShifter on the 'net
« on: March 24, 2007, 11:13:02 AM »
How can I let ShapeShifter use the amiga internet connection?
Sort of like using WinUAE which shares Windows connection!

You can specify your ethernet device in the ShapeShifter prefs. On the Mac side you have to configure the ethernet settings like you have a real network card.

That will only work if your network card is SANA-II, which means it supports multiple TCP/IP stacks on the same interface. If not, then you will need to use vlink (on Aminet).

Hi.

Sorry for the old thread digging, but i have the same question.

I have managed to get a working installation of Mac OS 7.5.5 under Shapeshifter 3.11.
I have setup my PCMCIA network card in the Shapeshifter GUI, then IP/ DNS/ etc in the TCP/IP program of MacOS and activated Open Transport Networking.

But it does not seem to connect.
I have installed iCab 68k as browser but it crashes with a type 2 error.
How can i test the connection? Is there a ping software included in MacOS?

Should i have Miami launched on the amiga side?

I have to make it work this way, as i do not have MiamiDX to use VLink from aminet.

Thanks for your help.

It *should* work, though I don't know whether there's something strange with that ethernet card you use. My setup is ShapeShifter runing MacOS 7.5.5/OT on a A2000 with a HydraNet ethernet card. Works like a charm. The Genesis stack running at the same time - but it should make no difference wether a Amiga stack runs or not...

Well it's the usual 3Com PCMCIA board.
How can i prove the connection to be working if iCab is crashing?
Thanks for your help.

Indeed, Netscape Communicator 4 is working, though seems to have hard time to show amiga.org, far worst than IBrowse 2.4.
That's terrific to use Netscape again :-D

One more question: where is located the Option key from the Mac on the amiga keyboard? It does not seem to be on the Amiga key. I need it to drag the annoying control strip that keeps hanging in the middle of the screen.

I'm glad you have sorted out your connection problem, but I think you might end up being a bit disappointed with iCab's CSS support. Although it supports minimal CSS, every site I have tested on it so far still has big layout errors, so Amiga.org is still best viewed through the proxy, and much faster through IBrowse than iCab. Still, it's fun to have an experiment with even if it's a little slow.

I use Shapeshifter with vlink so I can go online from AmigaOS and MacOS at the same time, which has worked well for me so far. The guide that comes with the vlink package tells you the exact steps to take to set the connection up.

If anyone would like to try Shapeshifter on their Amiga, I have gone to the effort of mounting and installing all the disk images for OS 7.6 as well as the 7.6.1 updates and all the other updates available, including the later Appearance Manager extension which makes OS7 look like OS8. These are all official Apple updates and are freely available on their site, along with the disk images for the OS, but I have installed it all and packaged the harddrive file for anyone else to try.

http://home.exetel.com.au/~amiga/MacOS7.6.1.zip

All you need to run it on a sufficiently expanded 020-060 Amiga are:

ShapeShifter 3.11 - http://aminet.net/package/misc/emu/ShapeShifter
MuEVD - http://aminet.net/package/misc/emu/MuEVD
MuFastZero - http://aminet.net/package/util/boot/MuFastZero
VirtualLink - http://aminet.net/package/comm/tcp/vlink

Here are the recommended ROM and OS for each CPU type:

68020: Mac LC
68030: Mac LC III
68040: Quadra 650
68060: Quadra 650

Best OS Versions

68000: 6.0.8
68020: 7.1.1
68030: 7.6.1
68040: 8.1
68060: 8.1

I'm in the process of writing a guide on installing and using Shapeshifter on the Amiga too, so when that's done I'll paste it here or wherever the most current Shapeshifter thread is.

This was more of a general message for any Amiga users wanting to try MacOS on their Amiga, rather than a specific reply to anyone in particular.

Remember: You can play games like Warcraft II, Links Pro Golf, Settlers II, Prince of Persia II and other cool games and sequels that weren't released on the Amiga, all in 640x480 in 256 colours! With the AMAZING MuEVD video driver, these games are totally playable on a 030 AGA machine.

Awesome work Cammy, thanks. :)
The OS archive will save time for a lot of people. It took me ages to figure out how to install MacOS on Shapeshifter.

Any clue about the keyboard layout for the Option key?

Dumb question, but would there be any way to use USB with Mac OS 7? :)
