HDs in E-UAE/Winuae
« on: February 22, 2012, 10:22:51 AM »
Hello

In E-UAE using the Hi-toro  front end and I assume it is pretty much the same in Winuae there are several
ways to create an HD file.

1. Make Hard Disk
2. Make RDB Hard File
3. Add Directory

Number one I have no issues with.
Number two I can create one but cannot get it recognized.

Now onto the third option.

I have recently started to use the Add Directory option which seems to be the
easiest of the three and has no size restrictions.

So am I right in assuming that the third option is the best ?

Option 2 comes closest to what is used on a real Amiga. Option 1 is similar compatibility-wise but less flexible. Option 3 is easiest to use but less compatible.

That said, if you don't encounter problems with option 3, it is ok to use it.

You need at least one option 3 drive if you want to exchange data between the host and the client OS.

OK, that being said I can create an RDB drive no problem, I can then add that RDB hard file to UAE, but when I boot the Amiga AmigaOS does not recognize the drive.

You need to create partitions first. You cannot format harddrives, only partitions can be formatted. As I said above this is what comes closest to a real harddrive.

Yes I do hear You, but how do I create partitions when the drive is NOT recognized by UAE when booted up.

The symptoms you describe ("Drive does not show") don't mean that UAE doesn't recognize the drive, they mean that AmigaOS doesn't recognize the drive. This is caused by the drive not being partitioned yet.

The tool for managing partitions is called HDToolbox and can be found in SYS:Tools/ after the OS has been installed to a hard disk. Otherwise it's either on the "Workbench" or the "Install" floppy disk.

Yes sorry, not recognized by AmigaOS.

Nope HDtoolbox does not recognize it, even tried this...

Run HDToolbox from Shell with "HDToolbox DEVICE uaehf.device"

Still no luck.

Try

hdtoolbox uaehf.device

without "DEVICE" in the middle.

I am not sure whether E-UAE supports HDFs in RDB mode, though.

Nope that does not work either, from what I have read about E-UAE it should recognize all drive types known to the Amiga.
