Where to score cheap external 500gb USB 2.0 drives?
« on: February 16, 2012, 03:52:18 AM »
I used to find these puppies cheap, now the prices seem to have sky rocketed. Anyone know where I can get these for around $50 in the U.S.?

The prices of all hard disk based products have increased hugely since the Thailand floods which stopped hard drive production in late 2011.  Hard disk prices will not return back down until later this year.

So in other words, the sweat shops have been flooded and the indentured servants are at loss for low pay work...

Man those people have no luck, and here I am bitching about hard drive prices. :/

In TigerDirect you can get internal 500GB 2.5in HD for $60 and External enclosure for $10 and make one yourself. It's not much cheaper, but if you are in the crunch it should suffice.

The thing is that I need/prefer one that does not require an external power source. Also if I can find those certain models that do not put them selves to sleep that would be an extra plus.

I'm modding my long lost brother's Wii and am trying to make it as crash proof as possible.

Most 2.5" drives I've thrown into the cheap external cases didn't require additional power, the only ones I recall needing that were older drives.

Prices have skyrocketed on all traditional HD's since the floods - OEM's snapped up every single drive they could when the floods occurred and the retailers had to jack prices up.  Being an opportunist scumbag that I am, I bought 8 WD 1 TB internal drives for $55 Canadian a pop one day on sale from TigerDirect while supply was still decent.

$99 was about the best buy I could find for something that would fit the bill for you - I had an older one of these that worked great, required no external power, etc.  I paid like $60 for it a few years ago, needless to say it's more expensive now.  Amazon may have some better deals, or eBay.  One I had came with a nice little neoprene sleeve case, worked well.

Target had Western Digital external USB 2 500GB drives for $22.99 on sale to get rid of them back in October.

I considered buying almost 100 of them to distribute the Commodore and Amiga archives versus dvd's at that price.

Like others stated, once the flood happened prices went insane.  Lucky I haven't needed any drives.

Yikes, I didn't realize prices had been affected that much. I almost bought 2 drives today - glad I didn't!
