Amiga branded Microvitec M1438S Power fluctuation?
« on: January 05, 2012, 08:07:08 PM »
So I bought an Amiga branded Microvitec M1438S monitor, but it looks like it was mashed in on the left side during shipping.  I tried turning it on, but it makes a loud clicking noise, the power light goes on and off with the clicking.  I haven't plugged it into anything except the power.

Any clues on this?  Could it be a bad fuse?

I'm sorry I can't help specifically, but Microvitec are still around:

Maybe they'll still have someone on their staff who would be able to help you.  I don't think they supply CRTs any more, but I believe they do repair them.

I'm thinking that sending it from the USA to the UK to have them fix it would be counter productive, it'd probably easier and less expensive to find a flicker fixer for my (hopefully) soon to arrive A4000D.  Besides, I'm liking the old fashioned retro feel of having a CRT again!

I sent them an email, hopefully they can give me some hints, rather than saying "hey, how 'bout you send us that monitor and we'll fix it for 100 bucks, and well it'll cost that much to ship it too!"

I asked Microvitec for an 17" multisync monitor for my Amiga last month and they did not reply.

Hi I had a Microvitec 1438S long ago, and I can confirm that clicking while changing resolution is a sort of "signature" for those monitors. You have to live with clicks. IIRC, while clicking the led turned from green to orange but my memory may fall. I guess your 1438s can't - for any reason - detect the frequency of the video signal and continue clicking. Try connecting it to a computer and see what happens.

When you first turn it on it makes a clicking and it makes a clicking when changing between resolutions that have very different scan rates. But the power light keeps on and it does not turn off or change color.

Oh, if that's all it was, I'm going to be pissed.  I hadn't actually connected it to my Amiga, since it was pushed in, I figured it had been damaged, I only connected the power to it.

Though it wasn't turning orange, it was going on and off.  I took it to an electronics repair shop on Friday, the messed up thing is, I was even thinking that I should connect it to the Amiga before taking it in, but I had not, since my current Amiga is already hooked up to my LCD monitor.

Guess I'll find out what the guy says on Monday.
