Ok... I was restoring my newly acquired A1000, the floppy drive would not read disks anymore, and cleaning would not help. So, I decided to install a newer one.
Because I have Insider II (1.5MB RAM) in A1000, I needed a compact floppy drive so both would fit (it's a tight fit). The drive I have chosen is Chinon FZ-357 (Made in Japan) PC version I got for $2.
At first it did not work, searching google I found this site
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=9365 , another Amiga forum. In the description it tells you the jumper settings and important "
J2" solder blob.
So I did that, when I was finished, the drive was able to boot Kickstart, but Workbench would not start. I noticed that the drive was not clicking like it suppose to.
I searched again and found a Czech Amiga forum
http://www.amigaportal.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=877&page=3 , in this forum they said to add another solder blob to "
J18".
I did that and when I tried again, it booted the Kickstart and Workbench. I also tried some NDOS games and worked perfectly. The drive is kinda noisy for my taste, but at least it works.
Because the nature of the drive, the next step was to drill screw holes in the floppy drive brackets. On the first try, I made the holes lower then they should, so the drive sits a little bit too low. I still have to fix that.
The final touch is to make the floppy eject button. The one from new drive is to wide and to short, so I decided to use "Plumbers Putty" and sand paper. The first result is not bad, I need to make some improvement.
