V3.1 RGB to PAL/NTSC Adapter Compatible TV

I'm looking for a flat panel TV with S-Video that will work with one of Amiga Maniac's V3.1 RGB to PAL/NTSC Adapters. Must support PAL and NTSC!

Anyone know of any models which DO work?


I DO NOT want to buy another one of those Video Conversion boxes!

Yeah those things DO NOT WORK.

I'll just say I have one of Amiga Maniac's s-video adapters and you will not be disappointed. My advice for your LCD is like this:

1. try to find and older 4:3 aspec ration LCD TV , will match your old NTSC s-video the best.

2. if 1 is not an option, find an LCD the auto detects 4:3 or 16:9 signal and basically will work with either smartly.

Other thoughts:

#1 - you might find used cheap

#2 - you could have a nice all in one VGA, s-video, HDTV solution with that setup...

I know you guys don't have SCART connectors in the states, so how do you connect up things with RGB outputs (IE: Amiga's, DVD Players/ Recorders etc...)

I'd hate to only have to connect things up with just Composite Video or S-Video, so what kind of connectors are on your TVs to give you proper RGB... :)

Well, he's talking about one of Amigamaniac's adapters, so that would be s-video, but it really is great quality s-video.

Beyond that, several models of TVs have VGA in, that can sometimes be used for RGB.

You can get scaler/conversion devices which take RGB SCART as input and have VGA outputs which you can hook up to your TFT/LCD. Some also do SCART/RGBHV to HDMI conversion.

The main advantage to this S-Video adapter is the substantially improved signal quality.

If that was the case and I lived in America I'd move... :(

S-Video is alright but it's not a patch on RGB and composite isn't even worth talking about, what about things like the Super Nintendo (SNES) does that mean back in their hayday that you had to hook them up to a TV via RF or composite and not be able to use it's RGB output on standard TV... :(

Seems odd (if this is the case) that Video devices in the US don't give out an RGB signal for use on an everyday TV (especially DVD recorders/ players), is there a reason for this by the manufacturers... :)

But almost all of the higher quality devices had at least "component"  video:

But I'm gobsmacked to find that you poor sods in the USA have had to live all these years without an RGB input on your Tellies... :eek:

I remember when got my first A500 back around 87, the A1000 was used with my CBM 1080 Monitor while the A500 was used around the house on various TV sets all with RGB inputs... :)

Couldn't imagine having to use an Amiga (or a SNES or anything similar for that matter) on a TV via RF, composite or S-Video, that would have been awful... :)

I need to find out why TV's in the US never came with an RGB input (just so I can email em and tell them their stuff is/was crap)... :)

Yeah, I was up on the whole PAL/NTSC thing, but I'd never heard of SCART until I got "back" into the Amiga...
At which point, I was thinking..  HEY!  WE NEED THAT!!!  :(

To be fair, I don't have a very discerning eye, and good s-video looks (TO ME) as good as RGB, at least on the examples I've seen...  

But I still see the ease at which you all connect virtually anything to SCART..

It's not fair really.  Not only do you HAVE all the kual stuff like SCART and castles (no, Disneyland's Magic Kingdom doesn't count!!), but the stuff you don't want anymore, like Ozzie, you give to us!!!!!

No. I think you are a bit confused. There are connection standards (e.g. SCART, Composite, Component, HDMI, etc.) and there are signal standards (e.g. RGB or YUV).

You can use HDMI cables to transmit RGB or YUV. Likewise, you can use a SCART connector/cable to transmit RGB or Composite.

Since devices like DVD players/recorders all have either HDMI or Component outputs, US citizens are not in a different position than Europeans. And even a YUV signal through Component is not much different from an RGB signal. It is just transcoded.

There are even converters that accept SCART (RGB) as input and supply a transcoded YPbPr signal via Component as output.

Most 3 year old digital/analog SD TVs with SVideo input will give a good picture.
If you are looking for a nice clean games display these do well.  Even CLI Text is okay.  Wokbench is usable as long as the fonts aren't too small
Here is TestDrive2 via an A500 and Amiga Maniac V2 Svideo adaptor on a cheapy SD Conia Digital/Analog TV with Svideo input.  Nice and clear. Sorry the photo is a touch out of focus and the screen a tad dirty.  It's in the kitchen.
BTW. I compressed the photos down 50% but you can only notice that on the dark photo. (:

SVideo was very common in Aus.  Hard to get it new now though.  Most TVs being Full Component or HDMI.

Yep but that thread is in regard to VGA adaptors yeah? and native 15khz / 31Khz(AGA) Amiga Screen modes?  This thread is in relation to the Amiga Maniac SVideo adaptor and Svideo TVs/Monitors
