FOUND! Really small 44-Pin SSD Drives for A600 & A1200

Hey all.  Years and Years ago a fellow Amigan Friend of mine worked at Simple Tech and was able to hook me up with this cool Solid State Dirve.  
 
It was only 512 Meg. but when a few others saw how small it was, they immediately wanted one for their A600s and A1200s.

Unfortunately, back then they were really hard to come by (I still kick myself for selling it with that system) and all they could do is dream of a cool, quiet system.

Well, since my deployment is coming closer to an end (No, not allowed to tell), I've been looking for some things for my A4000T to pimp it out on a light budget.

With my old system in mind, I went looking and found these!
 
They are 44-Pin IDE, Horizontal Solid State Drives ranging from 512 Megs. to 16 GBs. (The 4Gb. drive is $49.99 w/ free shipping)  The only down side is that they are on E-bay, and I know how several of you don't like E-bay.

I know that the new thing is SD cards, but if you don't need the removal factor and you want something that will take up the least amount of space; these are the way to go!

Hmmm.....Not super-duper fast, but plenty quick enough for my A1200. Very handy.

The original one I had way back when was around 5MB/S (20MB/S burst)

I would watch what you buy with cheapo SSD drives, many have fake chips and faked to say to mis-report the size.

Had one knocking about round here a week or so ago, once you re-partition the volume, it reports 8meg or less, was supposed to be 8gb. You write to them but overwrite themselves to appear valid but once you move the drive to another computer the files won't read.

Luckily the guy who bought it managed to get a refund.

Under my point of view i can't see any. You can get cheap 20-40 gb HDD's around, if not, a good CF card via IDE adapter.

How many r/w cycles does a SSD stand?

Based on the EBay description these are shipped directly from China.  I'm not sure how the legal system works over there but I'd rather not chance it.

As for the reliability compared to a non-SSD Hard Drive, the SSDs take the bumping and jarring actions much better than a regular hard drive.  Also, you'd be hard-pressed to find anything on an A1200 that would require more than about 4 GiB of drive capacity anyway, plus the filesystem doesn't support booting on a partition bigger than 4 GiB due to Kickstart limitations.  If you want a hard drive that large, you'd be better off getting an alternative hard drive controller rather than using the on-board one for an A600/1200.

Errr...  does anyone not have a faster IDE solution on their Amiga than the standard interface? But anyway, my point was that even though they are not super fast by SSD standards, they are plenty fast enough for an A1200. Why confused buddy?

I TOTALLY misunderstood your comment.  I thought you were saying that the transfer rate on the drive was slower than the Amiga.  My bad.

No worries. I took a look at the link you supplied yesterday and whilst checking my ebay today (I'm selling stuff) a load more of these little SSD's came up in my "Suggestions for you". Looks like plenty of them are available from UK sellers so I can buy without the worries SamuraiCrow expressed.

Well, $50 for a 4GB drive is rather expensive. I've just checked a German electronics shop and they sell a similarly shaped IDE CF-card reader for 7 Eur / $10 and a 4GB CF card for 9 Eur / $13.

$50 vs. $23. I don't think this DOM is such a great discovery.

Not to mention that the cheapest 4GB DOM I could find in Germany is 60 Eur / $85. So the CF solution is probably a lot cheaper than $23 in the US, too.

I searched all over the internet and all the tech stores I haunt and couldn't find ANYTHING for sale!  maybe I was using the wrong search terms, but when I finally found these I thought I had hit pay dirt.

Guess not.

Oh, and that Simpletech Drive I got so many years ago was about $200 for 512Mb. so in comparison, and I didn’t have anything else to go off of at the time, these seemed like a good deal.

Could you list the stores you found your prices at?  Maybe a like to the DDSs themselves?
