PFS and 8Gb CF Cards

So PFS is now free. Yeah!!!! :)

Problem is that I can not get it to work on a CF card any larger than 4Gb. I can set up a couple partitions at the beginning of the card, but can't get it to format the last couple of partitions at the end of the card. Each partition is under 2Gb, and I can create them fine, but I always get errors when formatting, though this does not occur with my 4Gb CF card.

Any ideas? OS 3.9 will partition and format the 8Gb card just fine with it's version of FFS, but PFS is not working out on this card. Strange.

Also when using PFS, what is the max speed that I should set the card to? The same as when using FFS?

Use PFS3ds (Direct-SCSI). The other version of PFS needs TD64 which is not part of OS 3.9. The SCSI version even works without OS 3.9 (up to 8 GB).

You cannot change speed. Are you talking about MaxTransfer? That's not speed, it's size. Yes, it's the same size as FFS. It's not dependent on file system but on hardware.

Alright, I'll try the scsi version, and yes I was talking about the max speed setting, and you have answered that question. :)

Strangely enough, I just set up a 8GB CF Card on my A4000 using PFS3 v5.3 and as Thomas said, I used PFS3DS.

Just in case you hadn't seen it, when you use Hard Drive Toolbox to partition the CF card, use the "add/update" button and then select "Add New File System".  Out of the choices thrown at you, you'll see "PFS3" and "PFS3DS", select the "PFS3DS" option and (in my case) is was loaded as Custom File System "CFS\00".  Use that when you click the "change" button to select the file system to use with the partition.  

I just set up a single 8GB partition and it is working fine.  All other options for HDToolbox were set automatically by the software with no fiddling required.

IT IS NOT ABOUT SPEED!!

It's transfer size, not transfer speed!

CFS stands for "stupid user didn't read the manual". HDToolbox always suggests CFS, because there is no way to retrieve the correct identifier from the load module. It's an input field, you should overtype it with the right value. Use PDS\3 a.k.a. 0x50445303 for PFS3ds.

When the A4000 first came out, I waited several months then bought one.

It came with a harddrive that was in CFS format.  I always wondered what the hell format that was?

I thought Commodore Business Machines had secretly invented a new filesystem.

What a mistake I'm discovering now! So, that's why I was always finding problems. I was using 0x50465303 for PFS3ds!!! Then I was using PFS3.
 
EDIT: Afortunately it doesn't delete the partitions, but do I have to use it in all the partitions or can I use for example PFS3 for DH0 and PFS3ds for the bigger ones?
