This could only happen here

Truly seriously this is my mornings adventure as posted on my own forum....

Hi

Continuing my hunt for lost kit and I have my list of items I need to find and these are ..

Dave’s A2000 with GVP
An older version Commodore 64
A working Amstrad CPC 464
Parnet cable

Anyway I knew I had a big tub of cables in the corner. The tub in question is lodged in the corner of the room in a stack that goes right up to the ceiling. In short a pig of a job. I removed carefully the two boxed A600s then the boxed CD32 and then the boxed Commodore Monitor. I began then to work through the tubs. To my joy a came across the GVP A530 Turbo 40MHz and got a touch sidetracked.

I hooked the GVP up to a A500Plus as it needed the later Kickstart  and my goodness, booted into its own hard drive in an instant. The comment on SysInfo gives “Smell the Rubber”. CPU/MHz 68030 40-30 2mb graphics, 4mb other and a 80mb hard drive. ‘ Which was nice ‘

I then returned to the tubs and found the box of cables but no Parnet. Never mind. I decided to keep out the GVP and set too putting back the tubs. Whist perched up on the desk and after placing all the boxes back safe I decided to have a quick peek under the mountain on the left of the desk. I slowly pulled back the dustsheet and there to my surprise was an old style Commodore 64 and it works. But that was not all, for next to it was not one but two fully working Amstrad CPC464s. I’m not done... sitting below the 64 was.... Dave’s A2000 and I just couldn’t wait to fire up and like magic booted straight in complete with a mass of drives.. DH0, Dh1, ART, MUSIC, WORK, GAMES... all running on the 68030 ‘ Cowabunga ‘ On the Workbench screen there is also Run-It, Shell, Opus and Amigaguide.  This has the GVP Series2 SCSI Zorro II. Plus the graphics slot filled.. how unusual especially with its own switch.

To top it off the 2000 was sitting on an Amiga 1000 that I kid you not I had no idea I owned. This sits on the floor at the moment waiting to be fired up.

So a bit of a failed morning really. No Parnet. I mean... what am I like ?

............... So I kid you not this is what is currently running in this house at this very moment.

An Amstrad CPC464 on its own green screen monitor. I have another working 464 leaning against the table.

An old style Commodore 64 running on a 1701 Commodore monitor and linked to a 1541-II external floppy. The machine sits on top of my C64C and I have two 1541-IIs plus two older style 1541's. All working. On top of the floppy is a plus/4 working.

In the workshop I have an A500 running complete with GVP A500-HD+ on a Phillips monitor.

Next to that is running a looped VidiAmiga anim on an A4000/040 on a 1081s. Next to that also running a VidiAmiga video loop is another A4000d/040 but this time using the PicassoIV on a Mitsubishi.

On the other desk is my beloved A1200 running a Blizzard Turbo and SCSI KIT to two external SCSI hds, CD and ZIP plus Power Computing XL drive and Microvitec Multiscan.  Busy machine this and been running since 1993.. every day.

Upstairs and I have my A1200 tower running on an IIyima as it has the flicker fixer. Plus Blizzard Turbo etc. This is an old EyeTech tower that I built.

Next is a humble A4000d/030 which chuggs along as I check my mountain of disks and CDs.

In the back room I have the A500Plus running the GVP A530 Turbo 40MHz and next to this is the Amiga 2000 with the GVP 030 running. On the desk but not switched on I have another A1200 on a squirrel to CD player and an A600 with hard drive.

There is also a Spectrum+ and PS2 hooked up to the large TV.

There are no less than 15 A500s in this room lent against the stacks of boxed computers. And I have the other 500 with the 590 sitting idle on the floor next to 2 C128 desktop machines with the plastic handles and original monitor.... and they all work. I check them along with most of the kit when I can.

I guess I feel very lucky.... just need to check this 1000 out now before lunch and then plan the afternoons activities.

Thanks for reading.

Sounds like you need to give some of that a new home to those in need! Share the love. One man cant use all those computers and make them happy. :)

Very True! I know exactly what I have and don't have. If it ever got to the stage where I was forgetting I had entire computer systems then that is a key indicator that I need to downsize.

Are you that Scuzz? I know a few.

The one I'm thinking of gets around, and has a dragon hoard or two, if I'm not mistaken.

Ere, didn't I do your laundry Mr? And a lot of other people's too? :)

If you're not that individual, nevermind.

EDIT: Sorry, checked your post history, impossible for you to be same individual... but you are spookily close in terms of maintaining stacks of vintage retro gear, but of course, not your site. Sorry. Wrong Scuzz.

Next time somebody posts about how they can't find any Amiga's for sale anywhere, we'll direct them to this post.

For all we know, their could be a whole global nomadic nation of people called Scuzz who own 98% of retro gear. :)

I have spent my life collecting and using my computers. I spend every day at my computers. I started collecting in 1982 with my ZX81 which I still have in it box together with all the tapes, and books and magazines. I have lovingly stored and looked after all that I have. I sit here broken hearted cus my PCW9512 drive belt is broken. But it will be mended. There is a black CDTV monitor here, yes black hooked up to an Amiga 500 with GVP. I found two A590 and two GVP in a box and I've been having a play. Two didn't work but that matters not as that is how they were when they arrrived.. I know cus of the sticky I wrote out and stuck to the base from 2004.

Yesterday I was sitting using an Apple ][ with dual floppy and own green screen monitor... listening to Peter Gabriel on vinyl on my Akai turntable whilst watching CoolWorld on my SONY Trinitron 32" TV on video tape. Today I've been mucking around with an Enterprise, Aquarius, Spectrum128, Tatung Einstein and an Apriocot.

All of what I have I have collected over the years. A lot of what I have has been collected by me in person. Much is also gifted to me. I was at a meeting one day and I was given a KIM in its original box complete with all the manuals.

I recall arguing on these forums about maintaining old kit and keeping the flag flying when many just dumped all their gear cus they hadn't got the space, even for one computer. I have retrieved boxes of magazines from garages and kept them safe. I even travelled the length of the country to empty a loft from a guy that had died and his stuff was just about to go down the tip.

My computers are more than a hobby. And if you have visited the site you will see the effort that goes into what I do. I regularly help others when I can... but you know, I rarely get a thankyou. I scanned a copy of AmigaActive for a guy the other day. Even worked the artwork in Photoshop. Not a word of thanks. I have sent keyboards, disks and copies of books half way round the globe just to find that the computer was then sold on Ebay. So I refuse now to part with anything. If users are serious about their passion they can acquire the stuff. And if you were ever serious about your hobby then you could have looked after what you had.

I still have all my Amiga gear, and it all still works. I have my machines running every day. And the reason... I love the Amiga. I love computers and I love what I do. Its a passion. Fortunately I don't have to ever say ' I use to have one of those '... cus I most likely still do. Every day is an Amiga day for me. Happy days.

By the way I stopped collecting in 2008. I just ran out of space. Since then I have only taken items when there has been a request from someone to add to the collection. People give me their collected computers because they don't want to see it broken up and hacked about. They enjoy seeing their computers on my website. I often get mail from folk that I have collected from.

Anyway.. enough.

So funny that. I was travelling to Stoke to pick up an A3000T and coming from the Midlands originally Dave insisted that I visit him as he was on my route back just off Speghetti Junction in Brum. It turned out to be a real fun day as I spent some time playing games with his kids. I retrieved some busted and broken 2000s which I have endeavoured to repair. The 2000 with the GVP got lost and as you know I found it while looking for the Parnet. I have had the 2000 running every day pretty much all day this last week. We even exchanged comment regarding the Bridgeboard which he had unhooked but I reseated. It really is a glorious machine. Freshly dusted and cleaned again. Won't lose it again.

As you know Dave was well pleased that the machine was still working.

I get an email from a guy in Darlington at least once a year asking if his A4000T is still working. He still refers to the computer as his and I always refer to it as his, even though we did exchange £750 for it. I never like taking gear from true Amigans and I always ask if they are seriously sure they want to part with gear. I would much prefer the items stay with their original owners. The most sad journey I ever made was to finally meet a good Amiga friend that was about to die. We had chatted over the years about our Amiga hobby and he wanted me to have his collection. The truly saddest part was finding in the collected books and items a large envelope with a copy of an A4000 manual inside sent by me to him over a decade ago. True Amigans never die and his memory lives on with me every single day.
