DKB Pal chips ? Know anything?
« on: April 29, 2011, 03:29:23 AM »
DKB shipped replacement Pal chips with their KwikStart boards. I have a KwikStart I but no Pal chip to go with it.

Here, Pal = programmable array logic. So it's not a thing I can find/buy, it is something they created, yes?

Ok, Have found some info, after tearing things apart again, argh.

It's a TIBPAL16L8-25CN and I just ordered a couple from Mouser so we will see.

Unless you've got a way to program them, the chips aren't going to do you any good.

I just know that some manufacturers such as DKB included or would sell faster PAL's if their customers WCS boards were not up to the task. Is something of theirs not working in or outside of your A1000?

Save, I have this other KwikStart I I'm playing around with, trying to figure if it works. But like I said above, I don't have an extra PAL chip to go with it.

So, I opened up the masterpiece A1000 to look at the one I do have, and learned the stuff above. And I'm not going to unsolder/move everything and risk things, if it has to be programmed anyways; just wasting my time.

So now what? Data sheet tells me it's a faster high performance PAL compatible with the ones on the daughter board etc. But they need to be programed I assume?

Where were you guys a day ago?

I think mongo is probably right.

He is right, without the code and a way to program them, its hopeless. It's sometimes possible to copy the old pals if the protection bit isn't blown.

Oh, duh.

Okay... so why in the heck is the PAL chip missing from your Kwikstart? I see someone socketed the PAL on the end of your WCS. I'm guessing that the Kwikstart you have, went with *that* computer since that's the PAL that gets replaced when installing the Kwikstart. Not sure why a PAL on your board would be missing though. I thought they were soldered, not socketed??

I have a spare WCS board, but am not certain if simply desoldering U6J and slapping her in the Kwikstart would work or not.

Would you post a pic of your Kwikstart board?

Since it lacks any internal registers, the programming of the 16L8 is relatively easy to figure out with a logic analyser if the protection fuse is blown.

Still means he will need a working unit, not to mention the programming hardware.

Ok, thanks guys. Getting it through my thick skull.

@Save missing Pal - well I don't know, probably still stuck on a daughter board somewhere. I got this thing with the Insider, and didn't care about it for a long time. Hmm, who did I buy this from...

I'm pretty darn sure it would work if it did have one.

Did you try removing U6J from the WCS pictured and slap it into the Kwikstart yet?

After removing the chip, do NOT plug the WCS daughtercard in to test this. If that PAL works with your board, you'll then be able to see which version of Kickstart is on your Kwikstart...
