Wanted: A3000 accelerator
« on: February 23, 2011, 04:33:31 AM »
First Post!

Ok, that out of the way, I've been out of the Amiga scene for close to a decade. I recently snagged a bone stock A3000D.  It still has 2.x ROMS and Ramsey04/DMAC02.  I'm getting new ROMs, but obviously, the Ramsey is going to stay where it is due to DMAC shortage.

Since I can't change the Ramsey/DMAC, I need to figure an upgrade that can work with that.  My understanding is that an 040/060 upgrade will most likely kill the onboard SCSI.  So I'm guessing I'm looking for an 040/060 upgrade known to work with the A3000s with old chips with a built in SCSI controller.  Does such a mythical beast exist, and does anyone want to sell me the unicorn?

Cyberstorm MKII-III should work?
Maby a CS PPC?

Just remember to do the INT2 mod or else you cant use the scsi on the cpu board.

Back 'in the day' I had a 3000T with a CS MK III, so I thought it might be a good option (assuming it fits in the A3000D).  I'm less interested in the PPC as I doubt it will be at a price I'm willing to spend. ($800 to upgrade this isn't in the books.)

Thanks,

Geof

Hi Geof,

If you can find a Warp Engine 3040, that  is the absolute best solution for the 3000 desktop bar none.  It is the only solution (compared to cyberstorm) that doesn't need you to hack the case for SCSI and it even comes with a jumper wire for INT2.  I have owned both cyber and warp and I sold off the cyberstorm MK2 and kept the 3040.

Find one!

Matt

Thanks for that info.  So, anyone got one for sale?  Also, I have some left over hardware that I never sold when leaving the scene, that I could potentially offer in trade. (not sure on all the stuff) but I have a AD516, CV3D scan doubler (the main card goes in my 3000, but the scan doubler doesn't fit, I guess AGA video slots are different), VT4000, a couple Picasso II cards.  Would any of those loosen your hold on a Warp Engine 3040, or similar?

Geof
(BTW, until I get the 3000 set where I want it, I'm not interested in selling any of the above stuff, for cash.  Once I am ready, I'll post a for sale for the extras.)

I have a Warp Engine 4040 in my A3000, there is no better accelerator.

Make me a good enough offer and I might be tempted to sell it to you.

Would be nice to see those fine folks who made the ACA accelerators treat the bigbox Amigas to a new proper hop-up kit. Been a long time since any new CPU boards for A3K A4K come out.

Hi Geof,

Thanks for the very kind offer but, I think I will stay with my 3040 for now.  Crazy world this Amiga Hardware stuff.  I bought mine years ago, and it's astonishing how well it held it's resale value... Wish my cars depreciated at that rate :).

Yeah, it's funny. I bought the 3000 for $108 plus shipping last week.  A month before I bought 8 processor/5gb ram SGI Origin 2200 server (probably cost $250k new) for $100 plus shipping. (granted the shipping on the Origin was $300).

I do wish I had held on to more of my stuff, but I was burned out on the Escom/Gateway/Amiga Inc. fiascos.  OS X was just coming out, and it was an OS I could finally get behind, and relying on a machine that could always guru at any moment, was getting old.

Now I'm looking to do it for entertainment, not reliability.  Plus, since I've been doing boring development for the last 8 years, I thought it might be fun to hack on the Amiga again.

The Goose

Well, making an accel for an a1200 and making one for A4k/A3k is QUITE a huge diff. Dont see it happening.
