Reading amiga hd on windows/linux?
« on: February 02, 2011, 10:57:32 PM »
My A1200 appears to be dying a slow death. It has bootup problems which I suspect may be related to the accellerator. I won't likely be able to replace the accellerator for some time... :(

I have no way to transfer the files off the 1200 when it does boot, so I wondered, can I get a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch hard drive adapter and read the drive with windows or linux pc's?

I desperately want to copy off my collection of games and graphics applications for later use (or use in uae) but I have no idea how to go about this. Any advice?

Steven

You can read it using Winuae using the Hard disk tab to add a hard disk to a Emulated Amiga session and read the files off it.

On Debian (what I use) FFS is supported out of the box, just mount your drive with 'mount -t affs /dev/your_drive /mnt/amiga'. If you're using SFS you need to recompile the kernel with the SFS filesystem enabled.

It's also possible to mount your drives with E-UAE but I've never tried that.

Never had a problem under linux reading amiga file systems. It'll display everything just fine.

Well thats great news, I really just borked my 1200 but good trying to rebuild it. I took the roms chips out, and while reseating them, one leg busted completely off. I don't have a spare set... yes I could try and jury rig it but considering the other problems I'm having with this I don't think thats a good idea.

I will order a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch adapter, I have some ide/usb adapters, is it likely that windows or linux will read this hard drive that way?

I've got like 2000 games, hundreds of amiga applications, demos, wallpapers, and so on on this drive. I'll be sick if I can't copy the stuff off. I am cursing myself for not backing this amiga up sooner!

I planned on getting a usb device and dvd-r for backups, but never got around to it. Like I said, I'm cursing myself good right now.

As for the 1200... Its dead jim! Anyone want to sell me a set of 3.9 roms cheap? Also, just so I know in the future, does the extra pin on the socket end up on the right or left when you install the rom chips?

Why there is an extra pin on each side of the socket, I have no idea, seems retarded to me, but then pc's are much more retarded.

I do happen to have just gotten a 1000, 2000 (working but need major upgrades) and there is also a 500 tower sitting here that I haven't gotten around to getting working. I suppose the 1200 dying is a good excuse to work on the others.

I imagine it'd work fine, but I havent tried it that way. Is it a CF card or a real hard drive ?
If its a CF, you might be able to just use a card reader.

You say you busted the ROMs. Are they 3.1 or 3.0 ?
I have a pair of 3.0 you could have, but otherwise I think they are like 20 bucks from amigakit

Yes those were 3.1 roms I got from ebay and looks like they were eprom burned or something... That may be the source of my troubles. Maybe I'll order a new set from amigakit and give this 1200 another go when I have more time. For now, I just want to insure the data is saved and safe.

It is a 2.5 inch ide hard drive not a cf card.

I suppose I could try plugging it in as a regular ide drive (once the adapter is installed) to my linux machine. (Crossing fingers that works)

Tonight I'll order the 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapter, those are pretty common but lets hope it arrives before I tear ALL my hair out.

That'll work just fine, as well as connecting the drive to IDE with the adapter.

Thanks Piru... How about morphos on a 1.25ghz emac reading the hard drive? Maybe its a good time to take the plunge and stop fighting with fickle ancient hardware...?

I have been thinking of buying one for awhile. Many of my graphics apps would run great... The games, can I use a competition pro usb joystick with morphos/uae on morph?

In setting up my new A3000 I've had to connect the SCSI drive to my linux box just tonight, so your question is well timed! :)

I just ordered a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch ide adapter so I can plug this drive into my linux pc and hopefully save the data. Its partitioned into system, work and games, I hope that won't matter?

That doesn't matter, the partitions just shows up in '/dev' as sda1, sda2, sda3 or hda1, hda2, hda3 (depending what linux distro you use).

You have to mount each partition with the command mentioned in previous posts. You also have to create directory's in '/mnt' or whatever directory you want to use as mount point, like system, work and games. Assuming you are using FFS, as root type 'mkdir /mnt/system' and then 'mount -t affs /dev/sda1 /mnt/system' to mount the first partition (system) as '/mnt/system'.
