WinUAE -> OS3.9 -> IDE Hard Drive -> Real Amiga 4000
« on: January 10, 2011, 09:24:13 PM »
Hi guys,

I'd like to:

- connect a 40GB IDE hard drive to my PC/Laptop (through an IDE to USB converter cable).
- fire up WinUAE, and prep the hardrive as a real Amiga hard drive, within OS3.9SE, so that the drive could later be attached to a real A4000 (KS3.1, A3640, 16MB Fast / 2MB Chip Ram).
- install SFS filesystem on the drive while I'm at it.
- install OS3.9SE on the hard drive, whilst still in WinUAE.
- remove the hard drive from WinUAE / Laptop, and attach it to the real A4000's on-board IDE chain.

Any pointers as to how to accomplish this?

Thanks,

x56h34

You've pretty much listed all the necessary steps. What kind of pointers do you need?

The only step missing as far as I can tell is to run WinUAE with the disableharddrivesafetycheck option to enable you to use real hard drives (assuming that's still necessary - haven't used UAE for a long time).

@Thomas and Motorollin:

Thanks for the info. I guess I asked just in case there is more to it, than the high level description of my steps. :-) I haven't really used WinUAE before, and this would be my first time trying to prep an HD like this, outside of a real Amiga. I guess I'll give it a shot tonight and ask again, if I get stuck. ;-)

This option does no longer exist. WinUAE now allows to write to all harddrives except those marked as "OS". In case your desired drive is marked as OS you can use the Windows DiskPart program to clean it.

OK, it seems to have worked. I was able to initialize + partition the drive and use SFS. I've installed OS3.9SE on it, together with the correct cpu libraries in libs, so that my A3640 would not act up on the real Amiga.

Next step is to put the prepped hard drive in my A4000 and fire it up. Hopefully it works. :-)

As you've done all that, consider using WinUAE to put Bloodwych's ClassicWB package on a drive and use that.  Looks and works great on my A4000.

OK, the prepped hard drive is the only device on the IDE chain. It's jumper is set to master. When connected to A4000, it starts booting into the os, then the first reboot occurs (the rom update kicking in), then as the miggy starts booting again, it suddenly stops (I still see black screen, no sign of GUI or cli).

When connected to PC, in WinUAE, the drive boots OS3.9 with no issues.

Really weird.

Am I missing something here?

What's your WinUAE configuration? You should select A4000 from the quickstart menu and then connect the HDD to IDE0 rather than UAE to test if it does not happen in WinUAE, too. I think I've seen this happen before with SFS. Don't know if and how I fixed it (I am not so much interested in SFS and its problems).

Hi Thomas,

I am using an A4000D 3.1 rom  (40.68). A4000 is selected from the quickstart menu. I am emulating a 68040 cpu, with 2MB chip ram and 16MB of motherboard fast ram + 128MB of cpu card ram. The hard drive has always been used through IDE0 (scsi.device).

I have also copied the latest Phase5 68040.library into the libs directory.

I've created two partitions on my Western Digital 40GB IDE hard drive (1GB system and 1GB work).

I might try FFS or PFS3 and see if it makes any difference.

I had a similar problem when I installed OS 3.9 on my A4000 for the first time. After the soft reset the Amiga hang with a black screen. But it continued to boot when I pressed Ctrl-A-A.

The problem disappeared after I installed Boingbag1. Now you've got a second edition CD and AFAIK the second editon already contains Boingbag1, so I don't think installing it again will cure anything.

But you can rename the AmigaOS ROM Update file in the Devs directory, then the ROM update is disabled, the soft reset will not happen and the Amiga should not hang.
