Mediator - No Sound!!!
« on: December 28, 2003, 11:18:26 AM »
Hi All

I ordered a Soundblaster 128 from PowerComputing the other week. The invoice that i got with my (Jiffy Bag'ed!!) soundcard said it was a Sound Blaster 4.1, but thats ok because it is supported on the Mediator, I checked the chip type just incase it was not a supported chip but it is (its a CT5880). I installed the card then installed the sound driver for AHI selected the card in AHI and low and behold there is NO Sound. I have tried it on various PCI slots incase one was damaged and have also tried a pair of head phones in each ouput socket. I know there is power going to the card as when you plug any speakes into the Mic socket it makes a funny sound.

Im not sure what to do I dont want to go to all the hassel of sending it back if it works.

My setup is
A1200 rev 1D.4
Mediator PCI 1200 (4 slots)
Voodoo 3 3000 16MB (PCI Slot 1)
Soundbalster 4.1 (Slot 2)
10/100 MBit Ethernet Card (Slot 4)
Blizzard 060 50MHz + 64MB Ram
IDEFix 97 on a buffered interface
4.3Gig HD
52xCDRom
OS3.9 BB2
Z4 Tower

Thanks for any help

Hi AmiBoy,

which ahi.device have you?

Can you ear the test signal from AHI prefs?

Ciao

PS- if you ear the "pop" sound during the boot, the card should be initialized correctly IMHO

As already suggested, try and set the mixer correctly.

is there (in the mixer) a pcm (wav, or something) slider too? or it's got only master volume? the pcm should be set to about 80%..

First make sure the software is installed. If you pull the card out and reboot your amiga, it should get an error about it not beaing able to load the mixer. Put the card in and type pciinfo in the shell and make sure it will show up. You need to also make sure you have the latest Elbox updates AND the MMCD updates installed.

use AHi 4.x,preferable 4.1x , dont use the later bugged out crap..

anyway i have never tried the type of soundcard you have (4.1) in such an mediator as according to my knowledge its not supposed to work IN your mediator , only in the SX models + others (the PCI 1200 is cut down version etc)..

anyway best way of checking if the card is outputting is to wire up your PAULA output to the input on the card (on the back) and wire up CDrom to the CDROM input on the soundblaster , then play a audio cdrom and check if u get cd output and other old games*demos..

if u get a passtrough signal , then u are OK! , worst case scenario you might have a broken voodoo card, if the ram is not working as it should then u wont ever get sound..

pps:remeber to set the gfx mem on the card to 15mb (68k) and 7 (ppc) ..
(u need 1mb for stuff like ethernet/sound)

goodluck
Whats up with all the hate!
