Trident, Subway or FastAta problem?
« on: January 08, 2011, 01:30:50 AM »
Hi:
Here goes a long thread as I've been reading and reading and can't find the way to install the Subway (Trident software) in my A1200. I had it installed and working before I installed the Fast Ata, but time ago.
Ok. I've got a clockport expander connected too, but I've tried without it, directly to the clockport on the mb with the same results.

Well, I have the Fast Ata running in Pio 3, the Clockport expander, and the subway connected to port 1 and the cables are ok (I've tried others to the hub port), and the light on the clockport expander lights on.
I've first changed the resolution to a PAL-High Res Laced of 674x554 because as I've read here you can have problems with Mui if you haven't enough oneeee ....... WAIT A MOMENT.... I've been around 4 hours trying to install it, booted around 30 times and now I go to read the details and now is detected by Trident in that CF HD???????
I had installed the same way it in that CF yesterday (with the same way I mean that I did the same around 20 times) and finally it detected the USB pen. Today I started the Amiga and... no USB pen detected (till right now).

Well... just now I've tried to install it in other CF HD without success, but as I had in my mind the idea that it woudn't see again the USB pen in the first, I've tried it again and as I thought it doesn't show the pen AND NOW trying to find it I CAN'T. I have to say that it wasn't showing the Save option, the same as yesterday.

Ah: In Trident I'm doing: Hardware - New -Subwayusb.device - Online. The report shows "Failure poseidon.library opening DEVS: USB Hardware/Subwayusb.device Unit 0 failed device/unit failed to open (-1)

Well... what do I do?
Thanks

Use lower case subwayusb.device - on Amiga the file name of disk based libraries and devices MUST match the internal name of the object. Make sure the file name is in lower case.

Hi Chris:
Thanks, but in fact I haven't changed it. In "DEVS", "USBHardware" appears as "subwayusb.device".

Better if I install the latest one, isn't it? Now I'm trying with version 3.3
EDIT:I've just installed 4.4.
I'm doing: Controllers - Appears subwayusb.device in unit 0 - Online. The report shows Failure - poseidon.library -"Opening DEVS: USB Hardware/subwayusb.device unit 0 failed device/unit failed to open (-1)."

EDIT:It has happened again. It's detected after some tryings and later it dissapears. I think it must be a hardware problem.
I have enough power I believe, as I'm using a 145 watts PSU. I'm going to check and resolder the solderings on the clockport riser...Nope. It makes the same after making that.

I'm using PFS3. Any issues with that and the Fat95 use of the Trident?

Important update: I've taked the subway to other Amiga using the same Hardrive, and the pendrive it's even detected as soon as it boots.
I connect it the same way to the Amiga in which I'm trying to install it, directly connecting the Subway to the Clockport on the mb (well, with the risers) and nothing.
There are then only three differences between both Amigas:
The riser (yes, I should have tried with it on on both), a repaired ceramic resonator in this one and the Fast Ata. Now I'm almost sure the last is the culprit. What can I do?

Edit: Forget about the riser, I've tried again with it on both, and the pen works in the other Amiga. So the culprit is the butler... I mean, the Fast Ata.

I'm afraid I'm only the software guy. Better ask the hw guy.

Ps: The detection of the subway expansion is afair a two-steps approach. First, a read-only algorithm (that won't disturb other expansions on the clockport) makes sure that a serial ID can be read reliably, then a second test checks the actual usb controller... If either one fails, you get a -1 error.

Yes, Chris I know, and thanks for the help. Your program is great and full of funny comments. BTW: I almost have a heart attack using Trident when I see the screen goes black and some words appear... I thought it was a virus, but was only to wish a happy new year...

You are making me to remember something I read about the IDE too... I'm going to try with a shorter cable to the CF HD, although it doesn't seem related, but it has to be an small detail, as it has worked sometimes...

BTW: Anybody out there with a Fast Ata MkII and a Subway running?

This thread isn't going to be a related software problem anymore...

I've changed the fast ata to the other Amiga motherboard and now the USB pendrive appears,, so now the culprit is the mb.... what piece can make a mb to work right except detecting the subway?
I changed recently the ceramic resonator:
http://amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=55653&highlight=component+broken
but I've been told that if weren't working, the Amiga woudn't boot, and it's supossed to control the keyboard, so... what can be wrong?

I've installed again the Amiga... like always. No USB pen appears. I've been thinking that I taked out the Rf too, but it went out smoothly.

And this mb was working with the subway before I did all this (ceramic resonator, Rf out, Fast Ata)

I don't remember how the Rf was, but I desoldered it and taked it out. Perhaps I must fill in the holes with tin for any other thing?

Any spikes on the Chip-Select line or other address related wires can make the communication with the Subway unreliable. As the Clockport only has a 4 Bit address bus, there is an auto-increment mode in the controller. Random spikes will cause it to malfunction.

Thanks Chris. It's solved:roflmao:!:

Looking near the clockport in the mb, I've seen this:
http://img64.imageshack.us/i/foto1uz.jpg
http://img843.imageshack.us/i/foto2qu.jpg/

In the photo (and with a magnifying glass) it doesn't seem to have a crack, but I've peeled off a little both traces under the clockport (first I tried to use an adhesive conductive paper, but as the crack is small, it doesn't make contact in both sides so it can have continuity) and it was looking me nicer, I've started the Amiga and I have the USB there... I've tried a couple of bootings, and it wants to stay with me!

That line broking traces was done surely when I installed the Fast Ata.
I've thought in a way to have better continuity and at the same time cover it, so, I've done a "brush" with a hair (only one) and I've painted both traces with Graphit 33 (conductive coating in spray) using the magnifiying glass.
I've tried it again and it works right!!!

Anyway I'm thinking to solder them with 0.2mm solder.

Thanks to all for the help.
