When machine freezes, is the HD light constantly on?

Nope. There is no HD access and the light is off

Really sounds to me like your hard drive is broken.  You will need to get a new hard drive and reinstall OS 3.9 on it, along with any stuff you backed up.

The problems appear to be from the OS3.9 partition.

Hmm, assuming you have a backup of all your important stuff from the 3.9 partition, could you format that partition and re-install OS3.9 from scratch? I had to do that to a 3GB SCSI partition that was acting odd.....

Did you reinstall anything or add or change any files at all between the aborted 3.9 install and when it started acting up again? It does sound like the hard drive's on its way out to me, but as was suggested before, if there's an incompatible library (cpu libraries maybe?) installed, certain software might be triggering it which the OS itself doesn't use... Maybe FPU library or something?

For some reason all of a sudden OS3.9 is giving me major hassle.

Once the OS screen came up it was saying "Attempting to load program WBCLOCK" and would freeze

So i rebooted with no startup sequence and deleted WBCLOCK from WBSTARTUP

Then next reboot it said "Attempting to load program Amiboing" and freeze again

So i deleted Amiboing from WBStartup

Now its saying "Attempting to load program C:Mount" and freezing again

WTF???

How can i fix this?

first bookmark this AmigaOS 3.9  homepage FAQ

http://www.gregdonner.org/os39faq/installtips.html

and since you can boot in AOS3.1 with SFS, i would try a SFSCheck* to the AOS 3.9 partition.

The HD broken, some missing libraries and/or a corrupted AmigaOS3.9 installation CD are valid options as well.

Good luck!

* SFSCheck is in the main SFS archive on http://strohmayer.org/

Ill probably be opening another thread asking for advice on a replacement hard drive soon.

Thanks and thanks to everyone else who helped me.

Try setting MaxTransfer value to your OS39-partition to 0x1fe00 in HDToolBox.

Could that help?

OS3.9 has been installed since December and it was fine until recently

Interesting to note is that i found that if I go into the early startup before booting and then click on boot, OS3.9 loads up properly.

But even so, once loaded if i try and load most stuff from that partition, the program does not load and i get the thing where i can move the mouse , left click and right click are acknoleged , but they do nothing.

But why would going into early startup (and doing nothing) and then pressing Boot make OS3.9 load up with no freezing.

I ran VirusZIII as recomended and it keeps popping up a window saying it found Fungus/LSD virus and removed it from memory. But every time i click continue and 3 seconds later it pops up again.

EDIT: I read about this virus and it says it is common that c:mount would be affected. so i checked that file and it was in fact infected. I disinfected it and OS3.9 (touch wood) appears to be working perfectly.

http://www.vht-dk.dk/amiga/desc/txt/fungus.htm

EDIT: Wow the Amiga (on all partitions) has literally hundreds if not thousands of files infected with this virus... VirusZIII is currently disinfecting them

EDIT: Virus completely removed from all partitions, but its still sometimes hassling me , but not as much. Will keep a wait and see approach.

Just one more question (i promise).

All seems ok as i seem to get round the freezing problem by doing the following:

Go into Early Startup and then hit Boot

Amiga boots up perfectly including all items in WB-Startup

If i dont do that, then the Amiga will freeze while loading WBSTARTUP

What does that mean? Maybe the HD needs more time to startup after reset or power-on?

Could the problems be related to the fact that the BATTERY is dead?

It seems there are some important parameters backed by the battery in an A3000.  I've never owned an A4000 so I couldn't say.

It would be much the same. In fact, a virus maybe more easily caught under 3.9, because it is probably relying on older AmigOS structures, and will cause some missbehaviour on a 3.9 setup.
