Any useful CAD software for Amiga?
« on: January 25, 2007, 07:39:28 PM »
Is there any 2D CAD software for the Amiga that is actually somewhat up-to-date or useful for current Amigas?

I had a look at a lot of the software.  Most of it is pre-1990 WB1.3 stuff that won't even run on OS3.9 without crashing.

XCAD and XCAD 2000 (I think there was also an XCAD 3000) were quite useful, but I don't know where you'd get them now.

The full version of "Cycas" version 1.78 CAD 2D 3D for Amiga was being given out for free just last year but I no longer see anything about it on their site now. You may try and contact them here..  http://www.cycas.de/

I had a feeling someone was going to bring up XCAD.  I looked into it.  Seems like it's the most full featured/powerful CAD software made for the Amiga, but it's not user friendly or intuitive (bad GUI, a lot of entering of numbers).

It's also quite old, like the others.

Whoah!  I'm very sorry I missed that.  Actually, I just noticed it is for architectural work.  Not the purpose I would like to use CAD software for.

I don't know if this helps you at all as it is getting somewhat old now and it is no longer supported, but I found that they uploaded CYCAS to Aminet for free.

here.. http://www.aminet.net/search?query=cycas

I remember some local councils over here used to use Amiga 2500s for CAD in the early 90's. Mostly road and curb designs etc.  So there must be some good software somewhere.  Dunno if it will work on 3.9 though.
I got DynaCADD 2.04 (4 Disks) It seems okay but complex and the instruction manual is useless. I could try installing it on my 3.9 A1200 and see if it works.

It's a pity. :boohoo:

But, thankfully, it's still available at: http://www.amigafuture.de
I clicked their "English" option on the left frame & then clicked on the "Downloads" link at the top middle of the main frame.  You can either then click on the "Fullversion Tools" link or go to the bottom of the page and click on the "Overview List for All Downloads" & there you'll find CYCAS 1.78.  The serial number you'll need to enter is located in the "README.GUIDE" file.  Just copy & paste that number into CYCAS the first time you use it.  You can enter whatever name you want to.

One caveat, though: Its documetation is in German.  :-(  For me, I am looking for the English documentation.  If anyone out there reading this has it, please send it to me.  My e-mail is obtained by clicking on my name "Rabbi" at the top left of this posting.  Thank you in advance.

You'll find a nice assortment of full working versions of other useful software & games in the downloads.  Check it out.

DynaCadd is the best CAD package (mechanical engineering) for the Amiga that I know of.

It runs flawlessly on my A4000PPC with OS3.9/WarpOS and offers full 2D functionality as well as  full 3D functionality.

I even have a tool that can convert the data from a 3D model to an executable CNC program, that can be fed to an CNC machine for manufacturing.

The second best CAD program for the Amiga (from my point of view, also for mechanical engineering) is MaxxonCAD, but this one is just 2D (some say its 2 and a half D, as it supports perspective drawings).
This one runs as well flawlessly with OS3.9/WarpOS.

And yes, both programs are old - from the early ninetees, IIRC...

If you are looking for CAD for electronics on the Amiga, I'd like to mention "Newio 3.5". Here you can enter the schematics and Newio does the routing for the circuit board layout.

I have a weak remembrance of two other (quite helpful) programs:
LogicWorks and (IIRC) DigitalWorkbench - but I can't recall their exact features now - its simply too long ago (and indicates that these are old programs, too).

"Cycas" for architectual purposes already has been mentioned - hmmmm, I think that's it from my side...
All the best,

Dandy
