"It's an 18 pin chip (Ricoh RP5C01) located at U178. That might be the socketed chip next to where the battery is fitted (was fitted) to the mobo."

Does the A3000 have a similar chip?

Oh, and is SetClock (from AmigaOS) somehow different than setting time with the Time preferences program?

I see a "Ricoh 9K3 76 RP5001" chip located at U190 (by the battery) on the A3000 mobo and... it is in a socket!  Try pulling it and see what happens.  At least you can always plug it back in again.

Another thing, looking other the MB closer, I discover the solder contacts for the battery are truly on the back side of the motherboard, not on the top.

http://amiga.resource.cx/photos/a3000,6

Which explains why so many messed up Amiga 3/4Ks still work even after BAD battery damage. If they were on the component side, there's no way in hell my computer would be working. Think about it, Duh!

So, I may need to dig the whole thing out of the box and then be able to fix it.

I removed the chip. Everything worked ok. But I tried to set the time and the 'Save' button was disabled.

Tried 'SetClock' and it reported "Can't find battery backed up clock"

Sooo, the DKB clock is MIA,  don't know how to reach it. I feel like there was some program that came with this hardware? Anybody know?

Found the instructions here:

No mention of software though...

Is the DKB clock new?  The battery lasts about 2 years and doesn't recharge.

Here's a quick reminder of what U190 is, etc. when playing around with the clock and a dead battery:

Yeah, I did buy a new battery for the thing. You're right no software, just auto configs.

@ save2600 - thanks - bolsters my thought that the tracks etc are on the back side. There maybe hope yet...

No, not all of the traces are on the solder side of the board. Most are on top (component side) and are typically the ones that get eaten up by the acid. Even traces that look good to the naked eye need to be checked for continuity. Same with components themselves. Chips, Resistors, Diodes and Capacitors ALL can be damaged by acid creep.

Dang. What about hot-wiring the clock chip? Let's forget about the the stupid crater pit motherboard all together.

The clock chip must need the 3V DC supplied to it some where. May be just some wire wrap wire hooked up to the right pins and I could be in business! ?

Ok found the schematic for U190. The negative side looks easy anyway

I know this is an old thread but I didn't see a reason to start a new one, subject is still good. I might have found a solution, but could be too early to tell. So far it is keeping date & time and the battery seems to be slowly taking a charge; It' been sitting around for about a year doing nothing.

If it really works, I'll share more details...

Great.  :)

Darrin, with a new battery my hack is working for days now:

http://www.amiga.org/forums/blog.php?b=296

Nothing is hot, keep checking the battery, volt checks, and is normal. If I can go another week, to Sun. I will call this a success.

Nice work.  I know my A3000 could do with the same treatment.  I'd still like to get a RTC working on my A4000 too.
