V3.0 RGB to PAL/NTSC Adapter
« on: August 06, 2010, 08:30:52 PM »
My V3.0 RGB to PAL/NTSC Adapters arrived in the mail today from Nathan of Amiga Maniac, but I'm having issues. I have written him, but am also writing here in case he is away.

First off I am running a PAL A1200, though I live in America and all my screens are NTSC.

I tried first going through the composite route into my 1084s, I was able to get a display, but it came up in B&W.

My settings were as such

1-down
2-up
3-up
4-up
5-down
6-down (what is csync?)

I assumed that since I was on a PAL machine that 2 had to be up and 4 up in order to convert from PAL to NTSC, though I tried to reverse this and no matter what configuration, the display always came out in B&W.

My LCD screen on the other hand still will not display the image. It will display my Atari 130XE just fine, but not the Amiga, with or without the adapter, via Composite and via S-Video, though I can see that according to the docs that that is to be expected, but what of the Composite output on the 1084S. Why is that still B&W?

It comes up B&W without and with the adapter. Any ideas?

Thank you!

It should be 1 and 4 on, 3 depends on if you want to enable tuning, 2, 5, and 6 off.

Csync is combined sync (or composite sync). Turning switch 6 on will possibly damage your Amiga. Keep it off. Always!

I have tried that (but with 3 on) and it came out B&W still. Any idea why?

It seems I only have one monitor at home that will display this PAL Amiga in color, with or without the adapter via composite.

Will go home and turn off 3 and see what happens.

If you have a "composite in" on an American A1084 monitor then it will expect a NTSC signal and the composite out on your Amiga will be PAL = B&W screen.  I bet your PAL screen via the RGB out is being output as PAL regardless.

When I moved to the USA from the UK I brought my PAL Amiga with me in a bag and I fondly remember using it on a US NTSC TV until my A1081 monitor arrived via cargo container.  That blurred B&W image will haunt me forever.  :)

Are you sure that PAL/NTSC dip switch isn't meant to be set to NTSC when using an NTSC screen mode on a NTSC TV or set to PAL when using a PAL screen mode on a PAL TV and is not designed to convert PAL screens to NTSC or vice versa?

Try setting the adapter dip to NTSC, hold both mouse buttons down on boot for early start-up and press space to toggle the Amiga from PAL to NTSC.  Does the screen output become "normal"?

That one monitor you have that works is probably supporting PAL and NTSC screen modes natively.  I have an older 42" Panasonic monitor that does that too while my 46" Panasonic one will not do PAL.

It turns out that it was one of those buttons of the back of the 1084s that was pressed in.

As for the other monitor, it will not work with the Amiga, so I'll prolly order one of those S-video to VGA adapters from Amiga Maniac.
