Help with Mac Mini & OS 4.1
« on: June 21, 2010, 03:45:49 PM »
There has been some conflicting information as to whether or not it would be possible to use the Mac Mini G4 1.25Ghz (with 32MB vram) with Amiga OS 4.1 with Moana loader.  I have not gotten it to work, but I am sort of returning to Amiga community after a very long hiatus...  Would someone be able to give me some valid information, or point me to the right location to find out?

As I have read, the problem lies in the Radeon driver, but I believe somewhere I read that someone had gotten to modify it, or had gotten it to work.

I bought this Mac Mini in order to start to familiarize myself with the new OS, I'm on the beta tester queue for X1000, but who knows if I'll be chosen or not-- so far I haven't heard anything.

Thanks to any/all who are willing to help.  If you would like (and If I get some valid information) perhaps I can compile something from the responses so others will have this reference guide as well.

Many thanks,
Ron

I think I saw something on EAB aka English Amiga Board.
It looked difficult to get it working and even then it crashed. You might be thinking of Morph OS on a Mac mini.

I wouldn't mind giving it another go on my Mini, although it's not the right firmware version.  I don't mind a little hacking.

Maybe we should gather all the knowledge and information somewhere... maybe outside amiga.org due to the forum policies (unless they've changed lately)
Code 6502 asm or... DIE!!

User Crumb, claims he has an earlier version running, but choosing a macMini for getting acquainted with AmigaOS4 isn't exactly what I would call a good idea (buggy old version with no further support).
Since you want to apply as an X1000 beta tester, I reckon that money are not a problem for you, so check if you get in the program or in the meanwhile get a used Sam for under 500.
You can keep the mini as a MOS machine.

I had been looking for used Pegasos machine (in U.S.? this seems like a bit of a stretch: the probability similar to a miracle happening, everyone deciding on world peace and I might still not be able to find a used one), and SAM still requires quite an investment to get into and I would be using something similar in spec to the Powermac that I had in 2002 (sorry to be such a downer on SAM)...   so I thought the logical thing would be the mini, which I got quite a good deal on -- but ALAS...

MorphOS is a compelling option, however I really dig the OS 4.1 interface, and want to play around with the direct relative to my original A1000's O.S.

Pegasos 2 would be the best choice then.

Meanwhile, grab the MorphOS ISO from MorphOS download section and give it a try. It's free (only if you really like it and wish to get rid of the 30 minute session limitation you need to pay anything)

i understood you are a PowerUser by just mentioning you want to join the Beta Test program, and I suggested a Sam just as a "sure" (as its readily available) way to run the latest version of AmigaOS (4.1 Update 2) in case you don't make it to the program ( a stopgap if you wish). A Peg2 is a very good option, less available, but if you can find one, it would be perfect.
