It must be a regional thing. I'm from California, and I call flip-flops thongs. It wasn't until Victoria's Secret and other lingerie designers mainstreamed the g-string and g-string-like underwear by calling them thong underwear that the moniker shifted. In most cases, though, the singular "thong" refers to underwear, and the plural "thongs" refers to flip-flops. Regardless, it's totally rad when a chick sporting both hits the beach. ("Totally rad" is canonical Californian. I'm from Northern California, so I would normally say "hella
" instead, where could be "sweet," "cool," "fresh," "dope," or any other adjective colloquially synonymous with positively good. I also say "dude" a lot.)
