Best programs etc to get on the Internet
« on: April 02, 2010, 11:35:39 AM »
My Amiga 1200 rack project is getting close to being finished and my PCMCIA network card from Chile from a member off here.

My current spec is Amiga 1200 with 64 megabytes of additional ram, 68030 50mhz and fpu at 50mhz, 2 gigabyte compact flash (hoping to have a replacement 4 gig one soon), with Amigamaniac's fantastic SVHS adapter with an LCD monitor that almost acts like a flicker fixer (eg no flicker on the higher res displays).

Now I just need to know the best browser to use (hopefully one that is free) and the best tcp/ip software to use that will be usuable on my setup.

Will I also be able to get access to shares on the network?

How would AmigaOS 3.9 work on this system, and how much is it to purchase?

OS3.9 will work well enough on that setup, especially if you don't use a JPG for your WBPattern.  It also makes it easy to get online since it comes with Genesis.

3.1 would be quicker, but after using 3.9 for internet stuff I wouldn't look back, myself.

IBrowse is the most capable browser for that setup, in my opinion, unfortunately only the demo (30 minutes at a time) can be obtained legally.  I'd still pick it over AWeb (which is free, as far as I've seen,) though.

2nd vote for Ibrowse over Aweb..it's a much better browser.

IBrowse is indeed far better than AWeb but unfortunately it can't be purechased anywhere and i am fed up of the 2.4 demo version which works only 30 min and with 2 tabs.
Personnaly, i use an old full and complete version of IBrowse 1.2 that was given on an old aminet CD.
Besides, i use Miami and Wookiechat. Can't remember my FTP program but there is plenty of them.

The best seems to be AmiTradeCenter. And talking about browser. NetSurf is shaping quite nice on classic Amigas but absolute minimum is 040 (at least for the latest version which seems useable on this configurations).

If he was looking for the better browser he would probably not be sitting on a classic Amiga. Personally I think AWeb has the advantage of being free, fully working and, well, available at all. It also runs quickly on modest hardware (even in Amiga terms).

As for a network stack I would suggest AmiTCP (again free and unbloated). I remember that there was quite a thorough guide on how to install it properly, which got me online.

It is not for sale anymore since its distributor (not developpers, which are still there, somewhere) IOSpirit has ceased to exist.

Well I've downloaded the demo of Ibrowse, got amitcp and the network card drivers.

All installed under winuae, just need to take the CF card out and put it into my real Amiga and see if I am online or not.

Hopefully be able to test this out later on tonight.  Happy Easter to all as well!

The main problem is that the owner of IBrowse does not answer to offers from other distributors who would like to take over.

Good luck hope it all works out.  Don't expect it to be anything super usable though on popular sites.  Still it's fun to get there.

I would recommend using OS 3.9 also, makes networking a little easier.
And for the the browser, Ibrowse get's a thumb up from me :)
