Bootup error messages - help me fix them?
« on: March 16, 2010, 05:29:35 PM »
I got an os3.9 preinstalled hd for my 1200. Its working now after some initial problems with video but now I am getting this error message on bootup :

"cannot open "atapi.device" unit 2"

It opens a little pop up window on bootup with this message, any idea how I can fix this?

I'm also getting another popup for idefix, I guess its not registered...

Also, It seems that my wb settings are not getting saved. That is, I set the screen resolution and colors, save, and when I reboot, it goes back to lower colors and screen mode. Any idea how I can fix that? I'm not sure why that is happening...

Interesting this cus I had the same problem with an A1200 I bought brand new from Analogic. I just assumed they set up their own device to install to the hard drive and now is not there. If you open the user-startup from the S drawer you will find the text that probably runs IDEFix. You probably will find the software on the machine that scanned and installed the device used by the installer.... Are you sure that the OS is running from the OS you think is yours. Cus often they use another version to install and forget to clean up. I even had a totally fragmented Workbench on the computer with part in another drawer. Get SnoopDOS running and monitor the activity to see which files are being accessed.

Annoying I know. Problem if you haven`t got a CD Drive on the machine and you need to reinstall OS 3.9.

No help sorry.

The reason you are getting these messages is because you have no CD-ROM drive connected to your A1200

The reason you are having problems saving your colours etc is that it's set to save them to RAM and not to HD ... Use the Save As function in each prefs and navigate to the correct place on the HD (dh0:prefs/env-archive/sys) and then name and save.

Or you can copy those settings from RAM to your hard drive (same location as above)
To err is human ... to BOING divine!

Okay... Now I understand a bit more I guess.

How can I fix this cdrom problem? I don't plan on adding a cdrom.
I'm not sure I can, can the 1200 use two ide devices without an add on?

Yes, not counting the adapters/cables you'd need to find.
3 Commodore file cabinets, 2 Commodore USB turntables, 1 AmigaWorld beer mug
Alienware M14x i7 laptop running AmigaForever

Open up s/startup-sequence and edit out the idefix section.
(and/or whatever other lines reference atapi.device)

May have a look in s/user-startup also.

Also remove the CDx (x is the unit number, normally CD0) from DEVS/DOSDRIVERS/ to Storage/DOSDRIVERS.

You don't have to delete the icon, maybe one day you want to hook a CD or DVD unit to your machine.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.
