Amiga Explorer Serial Speed and Screen Depth
« on: March 03, 2010, 11:17:25 PM »
Hi,

I hope this is posted in the right place!

I have just acquired my first A500 (Rev 6a Workbench 1.3 + 512K trapdoor expansion) since 1990 and I am re learning all over again!!

I have managed to transfer a fair few ADF files from my collection over to my A500 using a serial connection and Amiga Explorer and they work well. But as I have seen on this forum the speed via serial is an issue.

Currently the max I have tried is 19200 and it seems very stable.
I have seen many posts re using a hacked serial.device driver to allow increased PC -> Amiga xmit speeds but I am not confident enough to try this quite yet :-)

I have also seen a few posts that mention using lower screen depths and res's to allow faster xfer. The maximum that I can select in my Serial Prefs is 31250 but I know a few people have mentioned 38400 as being stable on the A500. Is this rcv rate hardcoded in 1.3?

My question is how do I change the screen depth to allow these higher xfer rates (if this is possible) and do I have to do anything else to enable them on the A500 end?

I saw a comment re using the tool types of the AExplorer program to set the rate but I am at a loss as to how to do this, any help or guidance would be much appreciated. If anyone would be willing to share a simple procedure for increasing the rcv rate via serial at the Amiga end it would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks in advance,

Ross.

Tips are as in the documentation and in http://www.amigaforever.com/kb/14-109

To reduce the screen depth and related DMA, go to Screen Prefs and lower the number of colors.

So long time gone after 1.3 but wasn't it on Preferences? Was it on Extras disk?

Yep, remember Lotus1 using add21k to put wb into 2color before starting the game.

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for all your help. I have run add36k and have succesfully managed to transfer at 38400. It seems like this is the fastest speed my A500 will support, as any higher than this and amiga Explorer doesn't even communicate with the A500.

Once again thanks for all of your input!

 Regards,

 Ross.
