Fastest baud dialup modem for amiga?
« on: February 03, 2010, 03:08:09 PM »
Does anybody know what the maximum baud dialup modem the Amiga can handle?  I have a 56K USR that I would like to put on my Amiga 2000.  Can the Amiga operate at this baud or would I need some kind of special card to make this happen?  Thanks.

The stock Amiga U-Art chip (serial) is to slow to take full advantage of a 56k modem.  It will work, just not at top speed.

If you got an add-on card, especially one of the newer ones, you will have no problem achieving speeds 56k and more (for other devices of course).

Thanks for the reply.  What are some of the newer ones you are referring to?  I saw different types such as Multiface III, GVP Extender, etc.  Would any of those work?

Probably 115200 with 060 accelerator and 1 bitplane screen or RTG card without addon cards.

My Amiga 2000 has a 68030 accelerator w 12mb RAM.  What exact card would I need to allow me to take advantage of the full speed of a 56k modem?

You should first try it out with the standard serial connector. Get baudbandit or 8n1.device from Aminet. Should give you enough speed to run a 56k modem. You won't get a connect with 56k baud anyway. Usual speed is around 44k through a normal telephone line. If you get 48k you are lucky.

Note that there is a modem setting which selects whether the real connect speed is reported or the maximum speed. This is set to maximum speed by default, so most people just don't recognise that they actually don't get 56k.

As Thomas said, the serial.device is extremely important to change. I used to get the best results from 8n1.device on my '030 fired A1200. It rarely if ever hit 56K baud, but was fast. (for a modem)
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I was able to use a USR 56k modem at 57600 using the standard Amiga UART under new8n1.device on an A500 with an A530 Turbo (40MHz '030.)  Mind you, I could not use the full throughput brought about by compression within the v.90 protocol, but it worked.

Which would be better to use between these two: MUlTIFACE III or the GVP I/O EXTENDER?  I read that the Multiface  doesn't have an eprom, so you have to install it with software.  Is the same true for the I/O Extender?  Thanks.
