Advantages of a kickstart switcher
« on: January 30, 2010, 09:48:03 PM »
What are the advantages with a kickstart switcher between relokick disk except having more memory free?

Not all patches/software work with Relokick.

An Automatic Kickstart ROM Switcher is very convenient, quick and easy to use, hold down Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga for more than 5 seconds and the alternative ROM is switched on.

Could you give me one particulary program that doesn't work with Relokick?

@Amigakit: Does this Kickstart rom switcher have some spacers or some isolation piece to prevent short circuit?

I want to put one in an A600.

An example would be: Half n Half - a patch to split chip ram into chip+slow for compatibility with games.

Yes it has a plastic insulation layer

Well yes, there are some older A500 game titles that require both slow memory and chip memory as well as older Kickstart.

The stock Amiga 600 has just chip memory.

As has already been stated in this thread,  if the game requires full 1MB of RAM, this will be a problem on a stock A600 as Relokick takes away memory available to the system.

I have never encountered any problems using relokick in the past but Amigakit does have a point about the kickstart taking up memory from the 1mb chip ram.

Is it possible to flash an old kickstart (or custom one) onto a Deneb?

Back in the day, relokick would sometimes cause the game to crash after a certain amount of time, but it could have been dodgy disks rather than relokick specifically

256 KB kickstarts (OS 1.x) are unsupported and I don't know what happens when you try to flash a 2.0 kickstart. Any 3.x kickstart including custom kickstarts will work.

the biggest advantage of a kickswitch over relokick is, you don't have to wait for the kickstart to load. suppose you're going to play a 1.3 game 100 times in your life time. if we assume relokick loading time as approximately 1 minute, you're buying 100 minutes of your life for 20 euros. if you're a gamer it may be even more.

We have recorded a video of the Kickstart ROM switcher being used within an A600:
