Perhaps you can do it my way: boot from cold to workbench 3.1 (disk), then install the drive (as 4gb or 8gb, obviously). then boot from your other drive into os3.9 and use fixhddsize to save correct information in RDB.

its work like super magic!!! thank you!
i frist install as you say on cold wb 3.1, its show me 4gig, then boot whit os 3.9 and install the util fixhddsize,and its show me the all 40 gb!
this is util is MAGIC.

I'm glad it works! be sure to carefully test you can copy files to all partitions without corruption.
