A4000 Zorro Riser Issue?
« on: January 13, 2010, 11:14:10 PM »
Hi Feeling a bit like Troy McClure here in that "you may remember me from such threads as-"
But I thought I'd start a fresh thread as the previous issue was not card related as originally suspected.
Background:
I have a Rev B A4000D with a Lithium Batt Mod, Buster 11, and an A3640 v3.1 with caps around the right way.  Other Caps on MB are in good condition shiny solder and all. The motherboard looks pristine like it has been well looked after or restored.  I bought the unit mid last year. (It had a bung HD and the chassis was slightly bent underneath around where the edge of the MB and the power supply meet)
Problem:
I have a problem with the A4000 motherboard or the Zorro riser board.
I have found that my Buddha card (Zorro II) will work in any riser slot. My Picasso II+(Zorro II) wont work in any slot(yet) and my Retina BLT Z3(ZorroIII) won't work in any zorro slot but slot 1. It works fine in slot one and I have had it running a demo all night.

Sounds suspiciously like a bad Zorro track or tracks after slot one that isn't being used by the Buddha.

Any help would be appreciated, (Or a spare zorro riser).  I have intermediate soldering skills and electronics skills(limited digital). Can anyone verify if the Zorro riser is multi layer. looking at the tracks on the surface layers it is hard to tell.

Cheers

Gertsy.

I had a PicassoIV fail constantly on an A4000D eventhough it worked in an A4000T. The compter would simply hang and not even show boot menu. Other Zorro boards (think I had an A4091 and a Cybervision64 at the time) worked fine. After trying out many possibilities (initially I didn't even test on the 4000T and thought the board was dead) I ended up buying another very cheap daughter board from eBay, just to try out but didn't even bother to try it. Bout 2 years later I tried it and the PicassoIV worked!
No apparent explanation, maybe a bad contact somewhere, like happens with the CPU slot and it's very hard to detect if you don't remember it... Maybe a dead chip, daughterboard only has one.

Don't worry Jose, i'm keeping my eyes out....
In the meantime I found this reference at Anthony's site http://amiga.serveftp.net/A4000_HardwareGuide/excrdnot.html
so i might pull out the ohmmeter and have a look.

Cheers,
