PC To Amiga
« on: December 17, 2009, 11:06:17 PM »
Sorry for posting this here; It is kind of a software and hardware issue I suppose, but it could go either way.

I have an Amiga 3000 I am outfitting with UAE.
I have UAE exactly how I want it, so now its time to get it on the Amiga 3000.
Here is what I have tried:

#1 Zip / LHA / LHZ the entire file hierarchy.  These all compress fine with zip/lha/lzh (I have tried all 3).
But when I burn these files to a cdrom when I try unzip it on the A3000 I always get CRC errors in a few of the files. (All of these test fine on the PC side and even un-compress fine on the PC side but not the A3000)

#2 Simply copy the whole directory structure directly to a CD then copy from the CD back to the A3000.
The first problem I had is I burned it as a Joliet and all of the file names got truncated.
Then I burned it as an ISO-9660 Mode 1. This seemed to work beautifully but all of the file names (atleast the ones without a . extension)  for some weird reason on the amiga side have a trailing . (period) after the file names.
Example:

VirusX.
VirusX.info
ToolsX.
ToolsX.info
program.
program.info

So it seems those files without extensions have a . added to the end for some really weird reason, yet on the PC side they aren't there.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I set up my Amiga4000s by using an IDE to CF Adapter in my 4000s, and I use a CF adapter on my laptop.

Then I add the CF card as a harddrive to WinUAE and set it up as an amiga harddrive there.

This is the simplest way to go about it imho.

To do so, add -disableharddrivesafetycheck as a parameter to WinUAE, and use HDToolbox in the Amiga OS to give the CF card a RDB and filesystem. And also run WinUAE as the administrator user.
A posting a day keeps the sanity away...

what exactly are you trying to do? copy files from pc to amiga? If you are burning to a cdrom are you compressing files on PC? Why not just burn the whole file and copy on to the amiga??? Why are you burning in joliet format? I am sorry, very tired and not sure I understand your problem or why I am responding.

I'd use a network for this, to be honest. My main A1200 no longer has a CD drive; it was sacrificed to install a NIC and I've never missed it since.

Thanks for the insight so far;

I agree that a CF card reader would work awesome (I did this on my A1200).
The problem is I dont have a CF card reader for my A3000.
Ethernet is another great idea, however I dont have an ethernet card.
My only option (without spending any money) is to transfer by floppy, null modem cable (terribly slow) or by cdrom.

How about this, Does the AMI command RENAME have some kind of wild card where I can do a:

Rename Program. to Program
but a wild card solution like:
Rename *. to * so it does all the files?
Remember; I want to remove all the trailing periods in all the file names with trailing periods.

That would work too, but the nagging question is, why do archives made on UAE give CRC errors only in some of the files in the archive when I unarchive them on a real Amiga? It seems to be random as well. This happens with Zip, Lha and LZH. They unzip fine on the pc side, but on a real amiga they croak.

Thanks,
Joe

For your renaming job, look at MultiRen or SRename from Aminet.

For reading Joliet CDs, you could use something like this from Aminet, or use a CDROM filesystem which supports the reading of Joliet discs, such as CacheCDFS which you can buy or it comes as standard as part of OS3.5/3.9.

As for the file errors in the archive, check you're using the current LhA version.  It also could be another issue such as the hard disk file system set with a MaxTransfer value which is causing problems.  Use HDToolBox to try a lower value such as 0x1FE00.  Careful with what you mess with in HDToolBox as you may accidentally erase the disk contents.
