Idea for a closer link between UAE and Linux
« on: November 10, 2003, 08:03:12 PM »
A couple of days ago I had an idea about the Amiga and Linux. Modify UAE to include a X interface to the Linux side while running the GUI on the Amiga side, allow UAE to direct shell access to the Linux side and the ability to have Linux applications commutate with the Amiga via AREXX. Also build in support for native code programs and libraries.

With the X interface running on the Amiga side, it’s code could be linked more closely with the native Amiga windowing systems and it would allow for a more seamless integration between the Amiga and Linux.

I'm not sure if I quite understand. Why would integration of an old version of AmigaOS and Linux be necessary?

It's not necessary. Using computers isn't necessary. However using the old version of the Amiga OS would allow someone using the combination to access all the old Amiga software along with having the advantages of Linux and the Amiga on the same system. Basically the Amiga would be acting as a GUI to Linux.

Does Amithlon have a built in X11 interface to the Linux side along with the ability to open a Linux shell, launch native Linux apps from the Amiga GUI, etc?

Well, if someone has the energy to make this happen, why not. Just sounds like a difficult task. I'll be quite happy with OS4 and perhaps a dual boot to linux :-)
