Would this work with A4000 and towerised Amigas?
« on: November 08, 2009, 06:49:51 PM »
This is a Card Reader which fits in a standard 3.5" panel offering a number flash media for easy access. I was thinking its ideal for an A4000.... What do you guys think, would it work?

Doubt it since they mention Windows.

Interesting... The (previously mentioned) DOS support and the fact it uses a single "drive letter" leads me to believe it acts like a hard drive with subdirectories, though DOS is fat16 based, and most cards I've seen are VFAT (FAT32). Might have some smart on-the-fly conversions for that, though. Anything bigger than 4 or 2 GB (Can't recall where Fat16 draws the line at the moment) could be a problem if using the DOS compatability, but otherwise it would probably mount as a FAT32 for larger cards, which should be accessable via fat95. Might be a problem if its doing the filesystem handling via hardware, one attempt at trying to format an SFS or FFS card would confuse the hell out of it. The only way to tell would be to pick one up, slap it into an Amiga, and see what happens. $30US+shipping wouldn't be too bad for this, and I would be tempted to try it except my sparre 5 1/4" bay is reserved for an LCD panel that I want to get working, and my wifes tower is fully populated in the case that it doesn't work. Also, having a subway USB device means I can use that kind of card reader instead, which I find a bit more convenient. Seeing as I already have a 40GB drive, a 100MB zip drive, DVD-ROM, and CD-RW fully populating my IDE bus. Perhaps if you have a Windblows tower you could use it in if it doesn't work on your Miggy, it might be worth the trouble!

Overview
The IDE DigiDrive is another unique Flash memory reader/writer solution for desktop system, fileservers, Kiosk or industrial application. Fits into standard 3.5" drive bay, the device connects to IDE controller as either a master or slave device. Unlike other DigiDrive members, the IDE DigiDrive utilizes one drive icon to read/write to the media in any one of the four media slots. The device can be used in legacy systems running DOS, Windows 95 or NT. The IDE DigiDrive functions just like a floppy device, using flash memory media instead of the old floppy disk.

At it's core, this looks like a simple IDE->CF adapter. I think it would work, but I'd have questions on hot-swapping and using multiple cards simultaneously.
