Guide: HowTo install Lynx 2.8.7 on AmigaOS 3.1
« on: November 04, 2009, 02:22:05 PM »
hi!

wrote a little guide for setting up the famous text browser for the amiga. should be good for lowend machines. i don't know if it really supports 68000, as in requirements are 68020+.

now v0.2 in lowend-friendly .txt file and some additional information
grab it on aminet: http://aminet.net/package/docs/help/HowToLynx

feedback is appreciated!

regards
jc

@jedcooper
 Thank you.
Since this guide is for AOS 3.x, i think that you should convert it to a text file or an older version of PDF, as APDF can't handle it.

good point! i didn't consider that.
could you quickly tell me what PDF version APDF needs?

i only run ghostscript on my real amiga by now. and that only for converting some files. viewing is annoying under AGA.

i simply upload the new file to aminet then? new readme with "Replaces: xxxx" etc.?

edit:

as i can see now it works flawlessly with ghostscript. but you're right, not everyone has ghostscript, and even on my machines it's terribly slow.
it's not working correctly with APDF because of the fonts used in ms word 2007 i guess. :(

.html format is not accepted for upload, and this would be also not the best idea, as one would need a browser to look at the html, and lynx is a browser :) some ppl might get it via FTP...
to do a .txt file i would lose all my formatting... hmms...

amigaguide format would be great. but i have to read through the scripting/developing how this might work.

 Version 1.3 or older.

You are right. GhostScript is able to handle up-to-date PDFs, but yes, it is terribly slow. I believe you can use it to also convert a PDF file..

Yeah. Last version of APDF was released at 1999 or something.

There are tools on Aminet that allow you to create AmigaGuide files without much hassle. I don't remember their names though. You either have to do a search or wait for someone else to answer this.
I suppose the most convenient choise for you is to create a v1.2 or 1.3 PDF.

hmm yes... i converted the correctly displayed .pdf in ghostscript to a new .pdf with ghostscript, but the same issue. got now apdf for myself to follow the issue.

finally i did a .txt file now v0.2 replacing v0.1, with some more little informations, too and uploaded it again on aminet some hours ago, but it's not there yet :(

As there are no images in the guide, why not use the Amigaguide format? ;-) But .txt is fine too...
