Amiga 500, Correct Screens, no kickstart screen
« on: October 21, 2009, 02:07:23 PM »
Hi.

I was just recently given an amiga 500..lucky me.

When it comes to starting it, all is well, dark greay, light grey, white...

but then i dont get the screen asking for a disk....:(

I have noticed that i get only a solid red led on the caps lock key.

I dont get any leds on the power or access led's either.

I have cleaned it all up, and replaced the diskdrive, which i knew was faulty.

I have also checked for corrosion and oxidisation on the chips, but all seems well except for a tiny bit on the chip on the keyboard...it is only on one pin.

Can anyone help me?...i have lots of games for it, and i'm dying to play them like i used to.

Any help or advice is appreciated...

Simon.

Ok well its quite odd to hear that there is nothing from either of the LED's unless they are faulty. I would try re-seating the various chips on the motherboard like the CPU, ROM, and all the others.
Have you cleaned the inside aswell as the outside?

All cleaned inside and out, i have also reseated all of the chips that i can, just not AGNUS.

Strange thing is that with all the test screens coming up ok, with no bad colours, i can't think whats wrong?...I though maybe a bad rom, but it passes the test?

What happens if you have a bad keyboard?

Well I wouldn't think it should make a difference if the keyboard is working or not but this is sounding like a ROM fault as you said.
I think I have a spare 1.2 / 1.3 ROM in a donor 500 if you are interested?

Simon.

What are you using as a monitor? If you're using an RGB>scart connection to your tv - double check that the scart socket on your tv is RGB enabled.

Also, are you getting any clicking noises from the disk drive? Are you able to extinguish the caps lock light? If not, then there's a possibility your Amiga is faulty. Try removing/reseating the chips again, check the connections to the keyboard and disk drive - and try again.

I'll try the CIA's again, I'm connecting via the 520modulator and an RF cable.

I do get a clicking from the disk drive...it just spins for a few seconds, and then stops (with or without a disk)

If it is my rom, how much would a replacement be?

Amigakit have 1.3 kickstart roms at only 11 Euros and they are a good place to buy from .

I might try that, but i might just keep it for spares now.

I came across a great deal on Friday in my local ads..

An Amiga 1200, in very good condition, with about 30 games, for £12!!!

What's the serial number on the back.

Sounds like an early machine.

You're not in East Berkshire are you. A guy mailed me earlier this month wanting to give an A1200 away. I often get folk wanting to give me stuff. Amazing as it may seem I was handed a KIM1 earlier this year if you know what one is.

The one on the silver label on the underside. If the case is the original it gives an idea of the age.  But if you've opened it up what's the mainboard revision?
