Hard-disk problem

Hi,

I have this hard-disk that contains several files in it from back 1992. Around a month ago I connected it to my GVP HD8+ because I needed to copy a file and it worked without any problems. However today I tried doing to same thing and this time the hard-disk is not even starting spinning!! I then connected the other hard-disk and this one also did not want to work either! Note that both hard-disks worked without any problems not more then a month ago! Finally I decided to connect the SCSI -> IDE -> CF card adapter again and this worked without any problem!!

I do not believe that both SCSI hard-disks failed on me (considering that when I packed them a month ago they used to work fine). I thought maybe this is a power problem but do not know how I can test this out. Finally I cannoth understand why the CF adapter is working whule this hard-disks don't - does the foremost need less power?

Both of them started spinning when I connected them to the PC (just the power). So does this mean I have some problems with the GVP? or just its power supply?

Sounds like your power supply is weak or going bad if it's not strong enough to spin the HD, but the solid state stuff works. Try plugging the power supply of the GVP into it's own dedicated outlet, away from a surge protector that has a ton of other things plugged in... failing that, time to put a beefier supply on it (wattage beefier or replace with known good original).

Also, make sure the expansion port is clean...

Wait... is the HD8 the A2000 version? IF so, are you plugging power directly off the power supply into that card or relying on the expansion bus to power it? If so, that's prolly your problem...

Do the same on the Amiga: connect only the power cable. If they don't spin up, you surly have a power problem.

If they do spin up with power only, but not with the data cable connected, it could still be a power problem, but it could as well be that you didn't connect the data cable correctly. Perhaps upside down ?

Both hard-disks do not start spinning when I connect just the power cable to them However as I said in the previous thread the SCSI -> IDE -> CF card works just fine and boots without any problems. Could it be that the power supply just lost some power? If so then can it be fixed?

Yes, seems your PSU has bitten the dust. No it can not be fixed. Just get a small frame PC PSU and adapt it to your amiga using your PSU's connector.

If I continue to use the current PSU (at least) for the SCSI'IDE bridge then do I risk damaging these cards?

Yes, seems your PSU has bitten the dust. No it can not be fixed. Just get a small frame PC PSU and adapt it to your amiga using your PSU's connector.

I wounder if I could adapt a laptop PSU and maybe make it fit inside the external plastic of the GVP PSU!!

I don't think a laptop PSU would work. They usually only deliver a specific voltage.
But you can get a Mini Itx style PSU and fit it into your GVP PSU unit. Luckily for you the GVP uses a common DB5 plug AFAIR.
