BATTERY

I have been getting ready to work on my old 2000 that has been stored awat for years.  It had problems when I stored it and I am just now getting around to working on it.  I had a lot of cards in it  so I decided to pull everything and start from scratch.  (See thread on "NEW GUY") in the this forum.   Upon a general eyeball inspection I noticed the 3.6 volt battery on the Motherboard.  I decided to check it with my DMM and I found that it had about 1.43 volts on it.  That being less than half the rated voltage I decided to inquire here about it.

So far as I can see, to change that battery I would have to lift the Motherboard out.  I would like to avoid that if possible.  

Is it possible that this battery will charge up on power up.  I am also wondering if that battery could be the cause of the problems I was having with not booting up all the time.  Also, could this battery being bad cause it to loose enough of it's charge during power off periods to cause my problems.

The main problem I was having is that the computer got so it would not boot up on power up.  I had to power on reboot about 3 to 6 times to get it to go and then there were sometimes other problems that may or may not have been related.

If Replacement is needed I am considering cutting the battery tabs at the battery and devising a way to install a battery so it can easily be replaced.  I have two 2000's I am trying to get up and going again.  Maybe I would do this to both of them.

I don't know what type this battery is but given the age I would guess NiCad or possibly Lithium.  I would think one of the newer NiMH types might last longer if I can meet or exceed AH ratings.

I welcome any thoughts and/or comments on this.

If the battery isn't leaking (or has no corrosion marks)
just let the A2000 running over night and check the battery after.

If it is leaking remove it as fast as possible. It will damage the motherboard severly. :-(

As far as I Know you can't exchange the battery against another type of battery. But these
NiCd Varta batteries are availabel at every Electornicshop and don't cost a house. :-)

A new one will last about ten years.

Any competent tech should be able to replace the battery for you if you can't. If it's the original, get rid of it ASAP. As Markus said, they last about ten years. It's past its prime now.

It's worth the trouble of taking out the mobo, just to give it a good clean.
