the new UFO game
« on: October 25, 2003, 04:31:17 PM »
Anyone else who played UFO: Enemy Unknown on Amiga for hours and hours? There has been lots of sequals to this wonderfull game for various platforms, but only now the latest sequel hit the spot. It has gone back to roots and is pretty much like the original UFO, only this time it's done with 3d engine.

Anyone who loved the game I seriously suggest to take a look at UFO: Aftermath

Grab a demo here.

To be honest it is NOTHING like the original. If you want the best (for PC) and plays great get Silent Storm. Release in the US in January. Try the demo if you dont believe me.

Agreed.  What would be most welcome is a new port of the original for AmigaOS (and co) and Windows, with new and decent gfx and sfx.

And minus the memory leaks of the original :-)

Ok... bring me up to date :)

How can you guys say its "not the same" when it's pretty much updated UFO: EU with a new engine and new aliens?
Ok, the turn-based strategy is gone.. in this case its ok as the new method works even better.
In principle, we have the same game, only a bit better (and they seem to have added some bugs to 1.0-1.2 aswell, just like the Amiga version :)

There were lots of games in the UFO/XComm series, some better than others. The older ones are best. Try to find them on budget and play them on bochs. But as ever, the newer ones have become bogged down in 3D eyecandy and now suck and aren't worth the time or effort.

Well I don't know, looks to me like it could be just fine. Will need to test it later on.

I agree.  I bought the first 3 for the PC on a 2 CD set called "X-Com Gold - Collectors Edition" about 2 years ago.  I think I paid about $20 for it and it contained the full version of the games updated to run on Windows (the first 2 were originally MS-DOS games) with the instructions on PDF files.

I still play the first 2 (I've never completed the second one!!!), but #3 sucked big time - too many features that confused the gameplay.

Saying that, the first game does tend to crash from time to time on Windows 98/ME when changing screen modes, meaning you have to save your games every so often.  Also, I can't get it to run correctly on my laptop running WindowsXP.  The game appears to be running, but the graphics are screwed up (it looks like it's taken every other line of graphics and tacked it onto the end of the previous line - if you know what I mean).  This could be due to my laptop's display not being able to display a resolution that low through XP/my hardware... I might need to try it with a CRT connected...

It's a classic game that would still play well today if the graphics were tweeked a bit to give more details at a 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution.  Well, I'd buy it anyway :-)

3D shooters are NOT the be all and end all of the gaming universe, and turn based games are really handy for the work environment so that you don't get distracted for a second only to find that all of your troops are dead when you turn back to the screen!!!  I hate it when that happens - thank god for Civilization 3!!!
A2000, A3000, 2 x A1200T, A1200, A4000Tower & Mediator, CD32, VIC-20, C64, C128, C128D, PET 8032, Minimig & ARM, C-One, FPGA Arcade... and AmigaOne X1000.

What sux is that the turn based is gone, thyey could at least hav done it like fallout tactics. Wher you can choose between RTS and Turnbased with Action points.
+ you can't build bases they way you did b4 and you are more limited.

If it isn't Microprose it sux ;-) like Mechwarrior 4
Mechwarrior 3 by Microprose were much better.
To bad they is no more...............
If you have ghosts you have everything

Roky rulz!!!

Yeah, when they changed from turn-based to realtime they broke it. They put the emphasis on action rather than strategy, and these games are not action games and shouldn't try to be action games.
