===The Hotel is Booked

The Clarion Hotel Cal Expo, site of AmiWest 2005, has been reserved for October 21, 2006!  After some hard negotiations, we were able to secure the venue where the inaugural AmiWest '98 show was held.  

===Changes In 9 years.

Of course, many changes have occurred in the venue and in Amigadom since that time.  The hotel has continued their update and we'll have a lot more news on that as the official information releases begin.  We're working behind the scenes to bring another great AmiWest show to Amiga enthusiasts throughout the world.

===Mark Your Calendars Now!

Now is the time to mark your calendars for this new date.  After listening to feedback from our loyal attenders and vendors, the October date was set for better weather and better airfares.  

===And a Good Time Was Had By All!

That was last year.  This year promises to be a good time as well, bringing the Amiga community together at the longest-running Amiga show in the United States!  Come and be a part of it!

I've only been to one of these, in 2003. It was a good time as I also did the tourist thing in CA.

Is there a theme this year? I'd say start giving the show a retro theme. Start focusing on the classic, classic games, nostalgia and such as the primary theme with anything new'ish as a sideshow. Retro is getting hot and there is no real NG system. Well... Retro is getting hot everywhere except the Amiga market, which is largely ignoring the classic.. That should change.

I hope I can go.  Perhaps this is long enough to plan/scrimp/save.  I didn't particularly have good luck the last time I went (2003) but I always enjoyed the show every time I've gone.

Wayne, your kidding me :-? That describes my trip in 2003 to a tee! An 8 hour flight with layovers in Texas!! And I was coming from Florida!! I was hoping there would be direct flights from AL to CA...

Sweet date change. I live in Sacramento, but July never worked for me.

I agree with Red. A retro theme would be cool. I'd like to see a classic optimization workshop (you know, choosing the right ROM patches, third-party widgets, etc.). I suppose that's something that's covered by most local SIGs, but still, it would be interesting. A classic towering/case modding workshop would be cool, too. What else. . . . An emulation workshop? Optimizing UAE for gaming, Catweasel, and general purpose use? (Amithlon is cool, but since it's no longer available, it probably shouldn't be on the schedule.) A classic programming workshop with an emphasis on current native and cross build environments (GNU C/C++ on Linux and Cygwin, VBCC, etc.)?

I really sincerely hope that you guys doing this show do something DRASTICALLY different from the past 5 years or so. Attendance was pitaful as was vendor support. The latter is understandable but the former could improve with better marketing/promotions. I had a friend fly from nyc to ca for this thing and he was an Amiga nut fanatic and he was very dissapointed and in his words "you could have shot a bullet across the show floor and not hit anybody... from several angles"

Attendance at Amiga shows in the U.S. has been steadily dropping for the past 6 years or so.

Typical marketing includes web site posts and mentions at user's groups in addition to interested folks being on the show mailing lists.  Given Amigans come far and wide when they come it's a tough thing to market to.

The sad truth is that folks just aren't interested enough to show as they used to be.  It's tough for the show promoters because they have to put up a deposit and risk low attendance and usually have to pony up an amount on the back end no matter what.  It's not like they set out to have low attendance.

Slightly O/T:

For Redrumloa - Flights to anywhere from Huntsville Alabama (except Washington DC) have to be done via "hub stops".  All airlines flying into / out of Huntsville stop at their nearest hub (Atlanta, Dallas, Memphis, Charlotte).

 AMIWEST 2006 - THEME AND GOALS

From the beginning of the AmiWest shows, certain goals and objectives have
 been in evidence.  While those who have been connected with the show are
 aware of most of those goals and objectives, many of you who attend may
 not
 be aware or may be new to the show.  So for you (and to remind others),
 here are the things we are trying to accomplish with each and every
 AmiWest
 show.

 1.  First of all, we are providing a place for the Amiga community to
 gather.  This gathering takes place from among a worldwide community of
 manufacturers, developers, users, retailers, and others interested in our
 great Amiga computers.  Old friendships are renewed and new friends are
 made among the many attendees at AmiWest.  Organized user groups are
 especially encouraged to come and exhibit.

 2.  Second, we provide a place for breaking news announcements of interest
 to the Amiga community.  Companies who are part of the Amiga marketplace
 have always sent their representatives to announce significant
 developments.
 3.  Third, we provide an encouraging, peaceful atmosphere where even those
 in conflict can come, bury the hatchet, and meet in a high-energy
 environment for exchange of ideas.  We tell those that are in conflict,
 legally or otherwise, to please leave their conflicts for other arenas.

 4.  Fourth, we provide a place where vendors can come to sell the latest
 and greatest Amiga technologies as well as some of the best tried and true
 Amiga hardware and software.  Each has its advocates and we support the
 efforts of our vendors who support our show and make it possible.

 5.  Fifth, we try to be as educational as possible along the way.
 We're working on a few surprises this year as we try to do every year.
 We're also continuing our practice of giving qualified presenters a
 platform to demonstrate what the Amiga can do.

 For 2006, our theme is "AMIGA Now!", showcasing what Amiga is now in the
 21st century.  Keep watching our webpage at sacc.org/amiwest and these
