A4000 problems
« on: October 10, 2003, 02:46:38 AM »
I'm having problems with my A4000 booting and /or running consistently these days.  It's been very stable up to this point and I'm afraid it may have been damaged by an electrical problem in my building.
Anyway, I have an A4000 in a Power Tower w/a Cyberstorm PPC, 90+MB Ram, Mediator, Voodoo4 graphics card,  SB sound card, 10/100 ethernet, and HyperCom 4.

What's happening is when I turn it on, it either goes through a little grinding, but doesn't boot(showing nothing on the monitor) or does the same grinding, but shows a green screen on my Amiga 15hz monitor (1042? i forget))and still doesn't boot  or it boots but then freezes after about 3-5 mins.

I have removed all of the peripherals and tried booting, with the same results.  What I'm wondering about is the green screen that I've seen more than a few times.  What does that mean in the pre-boot test?  Could it be a RAM problem?

Every color during the Amiga Boot-Sequence has
a special meaning. Check

It seems your Chip-Ram is corrupted.

I think it is the RAM.  My Amiga 1200 computer was acting up after I had it for awhile. It would lock up in the middle of nowhere, or when I heavily loaded stuff up into RAM.  I fixed the problem by putting in some new memory in it, and now it works like a charm.  :-)

Since updating my desktop A4000 to a Power Tower
I have had to open the tower and reseat all
cards and connections every couple of months.
The first thing to work loose is usually my
graphics card. When I turn on the computer
it either boots to a blank screen or will not
boot at all. Once I remove and replace all the
cards and connectors everything is fine again.
I didn't need to open up my desktop A4000 for
years but my Power Tower requires regular
maintenance. Try reseating everything before
you run out and buy memory or anything.

@xenic

the same here:-(

I think it is because the PowerTower4000, hasn't the rear Zorro card holder (the plastic guides that helps to insert and holdings the boards well fixed).

Another problem is IMHO, the poor PSU quality.

Ciao

PS- any way, do what xenic has suggested to you

I have 4 HDs and several power splitter/extender cables and they tend to develop bad contacts sometimes - time to check and maybe for some tweaking with a tiny screwdriver.

hi:
was an amiga dealer for a while, you have a hardware problem, that's what a green screen means.

the guy's who told u that it may be memory is probably correct. but there are several things on the mother board that can cause that green screen also.

what kind of memory do u have is it on an extra card? or just the ram that came on the mother board?
